The Truth of It

Dominique leaned over the crib and stared at her nephew. He had ten little fingers and ten little toes. He had chubby cheeks and an equally chubby belly. All in all, he was perfect.
"He's beautiful, isn't he?" Fleur sighed happily.
"Of course, Mum," Dominique agreed.
"Your sister sure makes the most adorable babies. I'm sure yours will be just as adorable, though," Bill said with a chuckle.
"Of course, you need to find a husband first," Fleur said.
Dominique stiffened even though there was no reproach in her mother's voice. Unlike her grandmother. Grandma Molly constantly made it known that she couldn't understand why Dominique refused to settle down.
"Fleur, Dommie where get married when she's ready."
"I know," Fleur easily said, reaching down to the baby and poking him in the stomach with a gentle finger. "She just hasn't met the right man yet."
Dominique sighed. She had been procrastinating, not wanting to see their disappointed faces, but she couldn't keep it a secret forever. And she might as well tell them now. Better to finally get it over with so they can come to terms with the reality.
\She took a deep breath. "Mum, Dad, I'm never going to get married.
"Of course you will," Fleur said, still looking at little Theo.
Meanwhile, Bill turned his focused stare onto his youngest daughter.
Dominique shook her head. "No, I'm not. I have no interest in men whatsoever."
Fleur finally looked up. "Okay, so you don't want to marry a man. That's not the end of the world. You'll settle down with a nice woman and adopt. There are plenty of kids that need a good home."
Dominique shook her head. "No, Mum, I'm not interested in women either. I might adopt one day, but if I do, I'll be a single mother."
Bill furrowed his eyebrows, his forehead wrinkling. "I don't get it. If you're not interested in men, and you're not interested in women, what else is there?"
Dominique bit her bottom lip. "It's called being an aromantic asexual. I looked it up when I realized that my lack of feelings or desire and romantic attraction for either sex wasn't normal. I have no desire to be with either sex, and that's never going to change."
Tears came to Fleur's eyes, her hand coming up to cover her mouth. "But, I've always wanted you to fall in love have a family. I want you to be happy."
"I can be happy without being in love, Mum," Dominique gently said.
Bill looked down at Theo, then he looked at Fleur, and then he looked at Dominique. "I just don't understand." He shook his head and walked out of the nursery without another word.
Fleur soon followed her husband, and Dominique was left looking down at little Theo. She sighed. That could have gone better, but she knew her parents. They would come to terms with it eventually and accept what she felt or didn't feel as the case may be, was true.
She just knew it.
Or at least…
She hoped they'd come to accept it.
