Just a short little piece on Conner and Rachel's relationship. Beware of fluff!

Disclaimer: Moving on.

Something was wrong.

That was Conner's first thought when his eyes snapped open at some ungodly hour in the morning. He was dazed, half-conscious, as he forced himself awake. He felt Wolf stir next to him, his snow white ears twitching, gold eyes opening as a whine escaped his throat. Conner placed a hand on his head, gently rubbing between his ears as he sat up. He got out of bed, padding silently down the hall, Wolf following at his heels.

Her heart.

It was. Wrong.

Something was wrong. Something he needed to fix.

He heard her heart beat too fast, much to fast. She was scared. In pain.

He entered her room, quickly making his way over to her bed. Wolf walked to the other side, bracing his forepaws on the bed and peering down at its occupant, a worried gleam on his unusually expressive face. Conner sat on the bed, carefully reaching out to her.

She always looked so fragile in her sleep, so vulnerable, so breakable. The beat changed again, skipping notes in its already too fast rhythm. But her body was still. The only outward sign that she was alive was the shallow rise and fall of her chest. And the crystal tears running down her pale cheeks. Conner placed his hand on her shoulder and gave her a light shake. Her breath hitched and her eyes snapped open, hazel orbs foggy and glazed with tears. Conner waited. Eventually, her eyes fell on him and Wolf. She sat up and reached out a hand, running slim fingers through silver fur. The enhanced creature climbed into the bed and curled up next to her, head in her lap, nuzzling at her stomach.

When she finally turned her eyes to his, the tears had stopped. But the pain was still there. Still fresh, still raw. Wordlessly, he leaned over and pressed his lips to hers. It was a chaste kiss, just a slight brush of the lips. He felt her tremble beneath him, but gradually, she melted against him.

This happened often. The nightmares.

Except Conner knew that they were more than just bad dreams. They were real, always real. Someone's memories, someone's pain. Always someone else's. The first time it happened, Conner didn't know what to do. He didn't know how to comfort. And he knew he couldn't tell her it wasn't real, that it was all just a dream. Because that would be a lie. And he didn't lie. Not to her. So he just sat with her, and really, that was all she had needed. So that's what he did.

Conner pulled away and crawled onto the bed. She pulled the covers aside for him, pulling them over both of them as she lay back down, sandwiched between Conner and Wolf's warmth. Breathing a sigh of relief, her eye slid shut, one arm wrapped around him, the other cradling Wolf's head to her chest. Conner pressed a kiss to her temple and followed her into unconsciousness.

"Sleep well, Rachel."

The end. Hope you enjoyed it. ^^
