Happy first day of spring to all! The only thing I really have to say is that I own nothing but the box of crayons that served as my inspiration.

~Blue~

Blue is the shade of clear skies, a sight Riff was never used to seeing. It is the only family he's ever known. It is his protection from a cruel world. It brings him comfort when no one else will, even when it seems as though all hope is lost. Blue is the Jets. But blue is also cold and can come in dark shades that usually mean trouble. Blue can be heartless. Blue is death.

~Yellow~

Yellow, the color that means sunshine. Yellow means light, warmth, and hope. It is the color you wish to see on a summer day, the color that brings smiles. If Tony could feel like a color, yellow would be the color he felt like. But what happens when clouds chase the yellow sun away? What happens when the embers from that yellow flame dissipate? What happens when all chances of that hope are lost?

~Pink~

Pink is strawberry ice cream and cotton candy. Pink is the color children use to make paper hearts, a symbol of innocent childhood crushes. Pink is the color of love. It is also the color of Maria's cheeks; pink from smiling at the sight of him, pink from blushing at his soft kisses. But ice cream melts, cotton candy gets sticky, and paper hearts get ripped and thrown away. It is then Maria learns that being tickled pink is only a temporary feeling.

~Green~

Green is new life. Green is new beginnings. Green is what you see in the early spring as flowers poke through sheets of ice. And it is the color Anita thinks of when she thinks of her new life in America. She sees the chance to branch out and start a fresh life, full of lush opportunity. She sees the chance to flourish with Bernardo by her side. But sadly, Anita quickly learns that even the greenest of things someday wither into brown.

~White~

White is the color of blank canvas, a space just yearning to be filled with expression. It is the color Bernardo thinks of when he sees what lies in front of him. America was going to be Bernardo's masterpiece. He wished to fill his canvas with bright shades of hope and prosperity; he wanted uniform lines displaying how far he'd come. But instead his canvas was splattered with colors of hate and chaos. And before Bernardo had the chance to redo his masterpiece, his canvas was snatched away, never to be touched again.

~Red~

Red is perhaps the most versatile color. It can mean passion and love. But at the same time, red can mean anger and hate. Chino felt all these things at once. When he pulled the trigger, it was for the passion and love he had for Maria, as well as for the anger and hate he had for that murderer; murder, another use of the color red. And when Tony hit the pavement, Chino saw the crimson color of murder spilled out before him.

~Gray~

Gray means everything in between. Gray is the confusion people experience when they don't know what else to feel. Which is exactly how Anybodys felt the following morning. She was overcome by so many different things that she didn't know which one to feel more. But Anybodys knew one thing: she wasn't going to cry. If she cried, all her chances of belonging to the Jets would be gone; gone like Riff, gone like Tony. They would be gone like an early morning fog: the gray haze here one minute, then gone the next. And with that thought, Anybodys came to believe that fog and life, are very similar.
