Love Is Like A Proverbial Roller Coaster

Ren heard the mail click through the slot and she zipped downstairs. She flipped through the stack of papers muttering under her breath, "... bill... flyer...," and such until her hand stopped suddenly. There it was, with the Lawrence High isignia adressed to Miss Ren Stevens. Without bothering to breath or say a word she dropped the rest of the mail and retreated to her room. She opened the letter hurryingly and ripped out it's contents. Flipping through the pages she tossed away her schedule, the normal beginning of the year letter, and club notices until she found it.
Dear Miss Stevens,
We are proud to inform you that you have been accepted into our freshman mentoring program. At this she gave a silent cheer. Sophmores are rarely given this oppourtunity but because you have proven responsible and because your brother is in this years freshmen class, she scoffed, we've accepted your application.
Her eyes scanned down the page skipping the drawn out formal bullshit to the end where she hoped one name would be. It was!
You will be mentoring Tawny Dean.
At the sight of the name her heart fluttered and she wondered how she would tell Tawny she felt such things. Amazingly enough Ren didn't believe she was nervous about this confession. By now she figured that even if Tawny didn't feel the same she'd be too shocked or scared to mention it to anyone. If she did feel the same, as Ren suspected or maybe just hoped, she decided Tawny would agree to her desire to keep it under wraps. Ren had long since went through the pain and confusion of defining her feelings for this shut-off all-black girl. The connection was simple really only the process to discover it was complicated. It was love pure and simple. Lust was the "added bonus" although in this instance it only caused pain. Looking in Tawny's eyes Ren only felt pain for what she'd never have. Then, just before she'd look away she always caught Tawny looking which built her suspicions and hope only to have them broken down again by Tawny and Louis' off again on again relationship. This day with Tawny would be her chance, her oppourtunity to ask straight out how Tawny felt.
