So I'm watching Iron Man 3 with my brother when I get in 42 minutes and I see Pepper and think. My God she must have felt so empty thinking he what died in the attack. So half an hour later and this is complete. I hope you all like it.
5 hours
Five hours. For five hours she believed he was dead. For five hours she had no idea what to do or how she would be able to move on. She stood on top of the remains of the house for five hours hoping she would find him underneath something unconscious but alive. For five hours she felt as though she had no purpose. She found a helmet in the debris and clutched it to her chest with tears falling. Those five hours were the worst five of her life. Worse than Afghanistan because she had watched him sacrifice himself to save her. Five hours she was consumed by her thoughts of watching her life fall into the ocean below and she couldn't see how she would ever be able to move on. She had seen herself with Tony for the rest of her life and now all she could see were memories and what ifs. The only thing that remained of him was the helmet she held like a lifeline. For five hours she didn't see any hope until she put the helmet to her face in a lame attempt to will him to be inside of it. That's when she heard the faint beep that made her forget about the past five hours of her life.
"Pepper it's me. I've got a lot of apologies to make and not a lot of time. So first off I'm so sorry I put you in harms way. That was selfish and stupid and it won't happen again. Also, it's christmas time, the rabbit's too big. Done, sorry. And I'm sorry in advance because, I can't come home yet. I need to find this guy. You gotta stay safe, that's all I know. I just stole a poncho from a wooden Indian. I love you. "
All her doubts, fears, and worries had been put to rest from his voice after the worst five hours of her life. And now she didn't care that she couldn't hug him yet because he was safe. She felt purpose re-invigorated and still clutching the helmet she pushed past all the cops and newscasters pushing for an interview or statement and made her way to the one car that had survived everything and she could too as long as she had Tony. The house may be gone and everything in it but he had survived and their love could rebuild everything with the help of his endless well of money.
For five hours she had begged for an end to her suffering, prayed for him to be alive, and she felt able to continue on with life because there was no life without him in it despite all the mess and headache that came with a life with him. The love she felt with him was worth all the suffering.
The End
