Disclaimer - You know the drill…I do not own any of the original characters of Sailor Moon or Marvel. A few characters to be introduced are of my own creation. Please ask if you would like to use them in your own stories.
Sailor Moon Timeline – I have taken Sailor Moon into Alternate Reality, she is still the Moon Princess/Sailor Moon/Serena but her journey is different which makes her different. I picture her more in a live action sense. Also in my description Serena she is taller than how she would be portrayed in the anime. She is about 5'10 in this story I have pictured looking more like when you see Neo-Queen Serenity.
Thor/Avengers Timeline – Picks up about a month afterthe New York incident. I know a lot about Sailor Moon but as I went I needed to do a lot of research since I don't know much about Thor Characters and trying to marry the idea that those lands coexisted but were still separate.
There is so much information out there that I am kind of mixing the Myth, Marvel Movies, and Comics. Although I picture them as they looked in the movies. As if anyone could picture anyone but Tom Hiddleston as Loki. This was definitely not an easy story to write, a lot of characters to learn about, balance and stay somewhat true to the essence of the character but I love it.
As far as powers for characters go you can definitely go different ways depending on what you read I am trying to best to stay with powers you know for characters but some may change or have something in addition. Frigga has been the hardest to write I think because not much is known about her.
I am also putting in an Out of Character warning. This is only one author's vision of these characters but I may see them different than how they have been portrayed in either myth, movie, or comic.
Authors Notes- I did not see Thor: The Dark World before and as I was writing I avoided it like the plague because I did not want any of the movie to influence this story. I did however end up seeing it but it was after I was almost finished writing my story. If there is anything story wise that mimics Thor: The Dark World it is purely coincidence. I like the look of Asgard and clothing in the second Thor more than the first. I picture it more in that sense but it will probably be a combination look of both Thor movies.
Before and while I was writing this story I had a lot of self-doubt and wondered if I was following the "rules" of Fan Fiction. Particularly when it comes to Loki and other Thor characters as they might seem a bit out of character to what you have seen in the movies. I even began to wonder if Loki was a Darien substitute which I guess any love interest you put in front of Serena is going to be. Loki is a hard character to write because he is always walking the fine line of being good and being evil which I have kind of walked him away from. After a few sleepless nights I realized that when it comes to writing there really are no rules. This is my idea and the story I am telling about these characters. Hopefully you like it and it entertains you because I certainly enjoyed writing it.
I like to warn my readers upfront. If you are a stickler for canon this story may not be for you. However I do ask that you give it a chance. Certain characters may be OOC and this may be what some call AU but if you can get past the changes you might find you like it.
I appreciate any feedback and listen to the opinions of my reviewers. I sometimes might incorporate ideas of my reviewers which have made my stories better and I will give credit to those that inspire me. I would love to hear from you whether through a review or PM. I respond to all my reviewers to let you know I appreciate them also to answer any questions or concerns you may bring to my attention.
Just as a quick warning I do edit all my work before I post and have people read my work but there still may be some grammar mistakes. I apologize for them in advance.
Story Note – Parts are in Italics are memories/flashbacks.
Finally on to the story! Please review I love to hear what people think.
Chapter One
A thousand years ago in a small meadow a man and woman sat together. The man was tall with raven hair that went passed his shoulders. His pale skin contrasted with his hazel green eyes and thin light pink lips. His hunter green tunic blew lightly in the breeze. The woman that sat in his arms wore a white chiffon gown trimmed with gold lace and pearls on the bodice covering his black leather pants and boots. She had ivory skin and full pink lips. Her eyes were a deep royal blue and in the center of her forehead was a glowing golden crescent moon. Her golden blonde hair flowed to the ground from two white pearl wrapped buns on top of her head. He pulled her close and smiled as her hair brushed his neck. She nestled her head against his chest and sighed. They sat under a large cherry blossom tree and were surrounded by additional trees, red and silver roses bloomed on various bushes, and the green grass was slightly damp like a meadow on a spring morning. There was a light breeze that blew rustling his hair and causing her golden blond strands to dance with his. It was a forbidden embrace but they didn't care, at this moment they were the only two people in the universe. The woman sighed again and the man spoke as he stroked her hair, his voice was silky and elegant. "Penny for your thoughts my dear?"
The woman removed her head from his chest and looked up at him. Their eyes met. She smiled that smile that always made his heart beat a bit faster. He smiled back at her and she was glad she was already sitting because his smile always made her weak in the knees. His eyes looked down at her with deep love in them but she always noticed a twinkle of mischief. Her eyes were such a striking deep blue that he always found himself drowning in them. She moved some of his hair out of his eyes as she spoke. "I was thinking about the first time you appeared to me in this place."
He leaned down and gently kissed the top of her head. She laid her head back down on his chest. "I thought I had wondered off into a dream and you were an angel."
She laughed and lifted her head to face him again. "Angel? I hardly think that is the case."
He looked at her seriously. "You will always be an angel to me, my angel. I have never felt as accepted, complete and peaceful as I do when I'm with you."
He kissed the golden crescent moon on her forehead feeling the warmth of it on his lips. When they parted she laid her head back on his chest. "I am content to stay like this forever but you know if they find out they will never allow it..." She looked up at him and her face changed from content and happy to fearful and sad "...if they find out you are here..."
The man put his slender finger to her pink lips. "We mustn't think of such things. When our secret comes to light it will be too late and..."
"Then let us leave this place, now." She pleaded pulling herself up out of his lap and grabbing his hand forcing him to stand as she started to walk forward.
He put his arms around her waist and pulled her close to him so she was facing him. She always felt small under his broad frame. He put a gentle hand on her cheek. "You know there is nothing I would like more but I still have a few more preparations to make. We do not want to go only to have…"
Suddenly the meadow was bathed in a flash of silver lightening and a loud crack of thunder. Followed by a bright flash of rainbow light. The once bright and happy meadow was plunged into darkness. The man stood, his clothes began to change and in their place he wore shining gold armor that covered his chest and arms. A hunter green cape flowed behind him and gold horned helmet covered his head. He stood protectively in front of the woman. Before them stood the only two people they feared, the ones that could threaten the happiness they had found with each other. The man who appeared by rainbow light was older with long silver hair and beard. He wore golden armor with a red cape flying behind him and a gold horned helmet. His right eye was covered by a golden eye patch. Gungnir his golden spear glowed threateningly in his left hand. When he spoke his voiced boomed with anger. "Loki Odinson…"
Loki looked at Odin and spoke quietly. "How did you know where I was…"
Odin bellowed in anger. "Did you think you could hide from his sight forever?"
Loki looked confused at first. Then cursed as realization of his mistake hit him. In his rush to return to her he had forgotten to conceal himself from their watcher. He cleared his throat to speak again as he felt his love shiver with fear behind him and tightened her grip on his arm. "All father please we lo…"
Odin raised Gungnir threateningly. "Enough!"
The woman standing beside Odin wore a white gown that hugged tight to her body flaring out at the bottom with a white bow on the bodice with gold crescent moon on the middle. Her silver hair flowed behind her from two buns on her head. A crescent moon shining on her forehead, she had ivory skin and navy blue eyes. Her facial expression was soft but her voice was no less harsh as she looked at the woman behind Loki. "Princess Serenity you do not know the depths of my disappointment in you. You both have risked war and death on your worlds. You..." She pointed to Loki "...will depart from this land and never return. I, Queen Serenity of the Moon Kingdom, order you to forget her as she has been promised to..."
Loki was about to speak in protest but before he could Princess Serenity jumped out from behind him and stood in front of him like a fierce lioness, her voice hard as she spoke. "I do not love the earth prince mother and never will. I will not marry for duty alone. I have found my kindred spirit in Loki and I will never love another as I love him."
Queen Serenity looked to Odin and nodded sadly. "Since you refuse to follow our request willingly..." Odin's angry voice bellowed through the meadow.
"We will not leave you with a choice." Queen Serenity finished. A round silver crystal appeared in her hands and began to glow bright. She closed her eyes as Odin spoke "Heimdall, Return us to Asgard!"
As soon as he mentioned the watchers name Loki threw two throwing knives at them from his belt as a distraction and grabbed Serenity's hand. Together they tried to run towards the silver portal that had brought him here. Lightening cracked and just before the couple reached their destination they were ripped away from one another. Loki was consumed by rainbow light while Serenity started to glow silver and disappear. Their hands barely touched as they screamed the others name.
"We cannot let this happen." A fairy woman with long silver hair said in a serious voice floating in front of another woman.
"If I interfere…" Another woman with long dark green hair tried to say.
The fairy shook her head. "This must be set right. You have watched them. You see how they both suffer. They could save each other."
The woman with dark green hair was quiet for a moment. "There could be a way. But I warn you it could come at a great price to both of us." She looked up at the staff she held and the red jewel at its top began to glow. "I will give you some of my power but be warned it will only last for a short time so if we are going to act it must be now."
The fairy woman nodded and the green haired woman closed her eyes as the jewel on her staff glowed a bright red. The fairy began to glow red as well and she could feel power filling her that she had not felt in centuries. As the glow faded away she disappeared in a flash of silver. The green haired woman said nothing as gray fog surrounded her.
In present day Cambridge, MA a woman stood in the stacks of a library staring at the shelf in front of her with a blank expression on her face her arm frozen as the book she was holding was half on the shelf. She was pulled out of her trance when a concerned female voice disrupted the quiet in the library. "Serena? Serena? Are you ok?"
Serena shook her head and turned towards the voice recognizing her boss. An older woman slightly shorter then herself with brown eyes and hair that was pulled tight into a bun. She wore a white blouse and plum pleated skirt. Serena nodded her head turning her attention to the book in her hand. "I'm…I'm fine." She insisted putting the book on the shelf and moving on to the next one when she noticed her boss still staring at her. "I'm sorry did you need something?"
The older woman looked at her confused. "We were in the middle of talking and you completely spaced out. Are you sure you're ok?"
Serena gave a small laugh trying to cover. "I guess I should have warned you about my tendency to space out before you gave me the job. I'm sorry Ms. Chandler it won't happen again."
Ms. Chandler looked her over and noticed how pale she had become. "How about you head home and get some rest? These books can wait til after the weekend." She walked towards Serena and pulled the book out of her hand. She put it in the book cart and walked away.
Serena didn't say anything as she walked back to the break room and sat in a chair putting her head in her hands. She tried to hold on to the images that had assaulted her mind but once again she could not recall the vision. "Why do they keep slipping away so quickly?" She said to herself frustrated.
She sighed as she stood up. She swung a black purse over her shoulder and left the break room. She got stuck in the middle of a study group rushing to leave the library to start the weekend. In the middle of all the excitement she slowly walked out of the doors into the cool fall air blinking as the sunshine hit her eyes and being bumped by people who rushed past her. As soon as she could she separated from the crowd and began her slow walk home. The streets were bustling with the usual traffic. She sighed longing to get to her apartment and out the loudness of the city, away from the people. She reached the corner of a street and while waiting for the cars to pass she looked into the window of the Starbucks next to her. She couldn't help but smile as she watched strangers talking and laughing. Her smile turned to a frown as she saw her own reflection in the glass.
She was tall about 5'10" and had a slender hourglass figure. Her navy knee high skirt swayed in the breeze topped with a white blouse and navy blazer. Her long legs were bare and she wore black flat shoes. Her golden blond hair was tied back in an ankle length braid. She had ivory skin, full pink lips, and deep royal blue eyes. To look at her you would think she was a normal woman in her mid-twenties but she knew better than to think or even wish that that was the case. As she looked at herself she knew it would be time to move on to the next city soon. The cars stopped as the light turned red. She pulled herself away from her reflection and continued walking.
As she continued on her way, she didn't notice a woman exit and turn towards her. She was mid height with short navy blue hair and eyes to match. She turned towards where Serena had been and saw keys fall to the ground behind her. She began to walk quickly after her picking up the keys along the way. She crossed the street and turned the corner after her. Just as she was about to tap her on the shoulder to get her attention Serena turned around grabbing her wrist and forcefully pushing her against the brick building next to them before she could touch her. Serena froze her eyes growing wide with shock when she saw the face of the woman whose wrist she was holding. "Ami?" she whispered.
The woman pulled her wrist out of her grasp and pushed Serena back rubbing her neck. She looked at her fearfully but also curious. "Yes, I'm sorry do we know each other?"
Serena shook her head. She had to be imagining things she thought to herself. "No I don't think we do." Her voice took on a harsher tone. "Why were you following me?"
Ami looked quite offended and held out her keys to her. "You dropped these and I thought you may want them back."
Serena blushed as she took her keys from her and put them in her skirt pocket. She could picture a certain cat's red eyes rolled to the ceiling. Without saying a word she turned around and quickly walked away. "You're welcome." Ami yelled after her and as the blonde disappeared around the next corner. She shrugged her shoulders and turned around continuing on her way.
From the rooftop above Serena watched her walk away. "She could have been her twin and her voice was just as I remember."
She watched her until she disappeared around another corner. Then she stood up and ran as fast her legs could carry her jumping from rooftop to rooftop. She breathed in the air as the rushes of wind blew on her face and through her hair trying to forget what had just happened. She stopped on the roof of an old apartment building. It was a brick building with wooden panels over most of the windows. She had bought the building years ago and made no effort to improve its outward appearance as that would only invite visitors. She walked towards the edge of the roof and looked down. She jumped landing gracefully on a balcony. She opened the sliding door pushing aside a dark navy curtain and walked into her apartment. She flipped the switch next to her and the room lit up bathed in a soft white glow.
She left the slider open and slid her feet out of her shoes. She liked the feeling of the off white wall to wall carpet under her bare feet. She walked through the living room which had been painted a light sky blue, a brown leather couch was in the middle of the room with two end tables on either side. A TV that was barely ever turned on was mounted on the wall in front of the couch with book shelves filled to the brim on either side. The hallway to her right led to the second bedroom, a small linen closet and second bathroom. To her left was a small square cherry wood dining room table with four chairs even though only one of them was ever used.
In front of her was the main entry to her apartment which opened into a small galley kitchen with light maple cabinets and black appliances along with a stackable washer/dryer hidden in a small closet. She put her purse down on the desk that was against the wall behind the couch and hung her keys up on a hook on the wall. As she stared at her keys the image of Ami came into her mind. She felt tears filling her eyes but held them back turning around and walking into her bedroom. She turned on the lamp that sat on a cherry dresser with a mirror attached to it that was near the door. The room was painted a light beige with the same wall to wall carpet as the living room. Besides the dresser, there was a queen sized cherry wood sleigh bed with matching nightstands.
The room also had a large walk-in closet and en suite bathroom. She walked into the closet and walked to the back wall taking a silver locket out of her pocket other skirt pocket and placed it on small silver table that also held a silver and gold jewelry box. She changed out of her work clothes and threw them in the hamper. She put on a pair of black skinny jeans and a simple pink t-shirt. She put the locket back in her pocket and walked out of the closet. She went back into the living room. She got a drink from the kitchen and after setting it down on one of the end tables she selected a book from one of the shelves and began to read. As hard as she tried not to her thoughts continued to drift to Ami. She shook her head dismissing it as her mind playing tricks on her and forced herself to continue reading.
Behind her a black cat with bright red eyes and a gold crescent moon on its forehead came out from the second bedroom and stretched. She frowned when she saw Serena sitting on the couch like she did every day and then glanced at the open slider. She walked over to the couch and spoke in an older feminine voice. "I didn't hear you come in".
Serena stroked her on the head without looking away from her book. "Luna if you didn't already know I came in through the slider you wouldn't have said anything."
"What have I said about the rooftops during the day? What if…"
Serena rolled her eyes. "…No one saw me. Besides today I had a reason."
"That would be?" Luna inquired with an eyebrow raised.
Serena turned away from her book to look down at Luna. She decided to skip over who she thought she had seen and gave Luna the short and sweet version. "There was a woman following me. She walked outside of a Starbucks and started to follow me. I decided it was best to get out of sight."
Just as Serena had predicted Luna rolled her eyes. "Did it occur to you that she was on her way home as well or wanted to say hello to you?"
Serena shrugged her shoulders and turned back to her book. "Why would she?"
Luna thought one of these days her eyes might stay rolled. "Oh I don't know Serena because that's how people meet and strike up a conversation. Maybe get to know one another. Of course I wouldn't expect you to…"
Serena put her book down and turned to look at Luna her face becoming clouded with anger. "Don't start on this again Luna."
Luna hopped on the couch looking Serena straight in the eyes. "We have lived on earth for centuries. Moving from place to place city to city. I am shocked we have stayed in Cambridge for the last ten years. Although I am sure you are already making plans for our next move. All you ever do is work, train and read. You have no friends, no one to talk to…"
Serena went back to her book. "I have you Luna."
Luna sighed frustrated. These were times she wished she was human so she could throw up her arms in annoyance. "You need human friends." She said stressing the word human. Then her voice became sad. "You can't be alone all the time. You could reach out to The Avengers or try to find others like you."
Serena looked up at Luna with sadness in her eyes. "There are no others like me." She looked towards the open slider. "I have to be alone Luna. I won't let…"
The image of Ami flashed in her mind again and she could feel the tears coming again. Before she could shed a tear. She threw her book down, got up from the couch and walked to the slider. She slipped on her shoes and disappeared before Luna could stop her. She shook her head and let a single tear fall. "I wish you could find a way to forgive yourself."
Luna was about to run after her when she felt a familiar presence behind her. She turned around and was shocked when the spirit of Queen Serenity floated out of the shadows towards her. Her blue eyes looked to the open slider sadly. Luna bowed her head and smiled as best a cat can. "Queen Serenity, How is this possible?"
Queen Serenity smiled back. "It is best that how I came to be here be kept secret for now. It is good to see you Luna. I would ask how my daughter is but I already know the answer."
Luna's face turned to sadness as she looked at her queen. "I thought over the years she would begin to soften and try to find some happiness in this world but it seems the more time passes the more withdrawn she becomes."
Queen Serenity nodded. "I knew that saving her would come at a price but I never thought it would be the lonely guilt ridden life she has made for herself. I have hope there is still a way to reach her. However to do so requires you to have memories returned that were taken from you."
Luna looked at the queen in shock and she noticed Queen Serenity's face change to guilt. "Before the Moon Kingdom was destroyed Serenity met and fell in love with a man from the realm of Asgard named Loki. His father and I thought their relationship could have destroyed the alliances the Moon Kingdom had worked so hard to build and bring war to a realm still rebuilding." She saw the confused look on Luna's face and smiled. "Close your eyes and all will become clear."
Luna did as requested and Queen Serenity closed hers as well. As she concentrated she began to glow silver and the crescent moon on her forehead began to glow a brighter gold. A white beam of light shot out from her crescent moon and connected with Luna's. Images flashed in her mind and she let out a gasp as she remembered him. The man that Princess Serenity was willing to give up everything for, her lost love. Memories that she never knew were broken suddenly connected in her mind. A forgotten conversation with Queen Serenity came to the front of Luna's mind.
Luna looked at her queen with a sad expression as she followed her into the thrown room. "Queen Serenity as always I respect your rule but are you sure you could not have let this play out."
Queen Serenity turned around and walked towards Luna her white gown swaying as she walked towards her feline advisor. The queen's light blue eyes hardened as she knelt in front of Luna and spoke seriously. "They left us no choice. The safety of our people comes before everything, even the happiness of my daughter."
"But my Queen she loves him and he her. Surely that..." Luna tried to argue but was quiet when Queen Serenity raised her hand.
"Love is not all that is important and things very well could have all worked with happiness for all. As queen I do not have the luxury of taking risks with the lives of our people. To which Odin agreed, Princess Serenity was betrothed to a prince from a kingdom on earth the day after her christening finally resulting in a truce and peace for the Silver Millennium. I cannot break this without it resulting in war. Odin may not have had the same burden as I but war has come and gone for his people and he cannot have his son in a relationship with the Princess of a kingdom his allies do not fully know or trust."
Luna sighed. "She will never love the Earth prince as she loves him."
Queen Serenity sighed glancing at the silver crystal that rested on a silver pedestal to the right of her thrown. "She will not remember him nor he her. As the moon shines in the sky tonight the crystal will glow. The memories of their love will be locked away in their minds and the minds of anyone who knew of it. A step I did not want to take but necessary if peace is to endure, a secret that only his father, Sailor Pluto and I will carry. Princess Serenity will wake and do what her duty commands, in time she will learn to love the earth prince as she did Loki and as I did her father."
The memory faded and Luna opened her eyes. She stared at Queen Serenity in shock and she looked back at Luna with sadness in her eyes. Luna sat for a few moments absorbing this new information. Finally she found her voice. "Forgive me but how could you do that to your own daughter? Had she had him maybe…?"
Queen Serenity did not let Luna finish. "I did what I thought was right at the time. No one feels more guilt about that night then I. I fear that the longer Serenity travels this path the more vulnerable she becomes. She needs to let someone in and see that there is still happiness to be found. I know Loki could be that for her but he has fallen into such a dark place that he cannot find his way out of it. He sees no light or hope and only feels pain and loss, much like my daughter. My hope is that reuniting them could set right both of their paths."
Luna looked to Queen Serenity hopefully. "Will you restore the princess's memories as well?"
Queen Serenity shook her head. "He will fall to her this night but in order for him to come to earth certain steps must be taken to protect the innocents here." Luna was about to speak but she continued. "I gave you these memories so that when he comes she does not discard him as she has anyone that has tried to get to know her."
Luna nodded in understanding. "My queen you know that if everything works out the way you hope Serenity will be understandably upset with you."
Queen Serenity nodded but said nothing more and in a flash of silver she was gone. Luna stared at the spot where she had been letting the information she had been given sink in. After a few moments she turned and looked at the open slider. She ran to it and left to find her mistress. She jumped from the rooftops and searched Serenity's usual training spots but she wasn't at any of them. There was only one other place she could be and Luna started to make her way there.
