Mr Amanjit's Angel
Nobody took any particular notice as Amanjit Singh was hit by a bullet, he fell to the ground and everybody else continued. In the trenches it was hardly an uncommon occurrence, a few stretcher bearers ran on and managed to carry the man aside. The placed him on the ground near the other casualties, all waiting for an ambulance.
A woman passed the injured men examining them, she paused when she reached him, his bullet wound was almost certainly fatal, when the next ambulance arrived the driver went over to Mr Amanjit,
"no, not him," the woman shouted in a French accent, "he won't make the journey." Mr Amanjit heard every word, he wanted to cry out, beg for help, tell them he would make the journey but his body wouldn't obey, it throbbed and he had to listen as all the ambulance drivers were told to leave him and choose someone else. His eyes started closing, he was losing blood fast as his eyes closed he saw an angel, she had pale skin, beautiful blue-green-grey eyes and a golden halo around her head. "Not him," the French woman cried,
"why not him?" the Angel replied with a clear English accent, the Angel then picked him up and carried him onto the next place...
A few days later Amanjit Singh awoke and the first thing he saw was white, then he saw the Doctor and the Nurses, "you are very lucky," the Doctor told him,
"if you hadn't got here where you did you would have died."
Over the next few weeks Amanjit Singh recovered, he was declared unfit for action so he was sent to work in offices elsewhere, filing stuff away.
When the war was over he returned to India and his experience in the office landed him with the position of Secretary for Lady Maud Holland.
He went everywhere with her and when she returned to England he accompanied her, he stayed with her until her death then he found himself confused by his role at 165 Eaton Place, and he was especially confused by her rather pushy younger half sister Doctor Blanche Mottershead.
But never once did he recognise her blue-green-grey eyes, her pale skin, her clear English accent or her golden curls and he never ever realised that his Angel was in fact Doctor Blanche Mottershead.
