Trust

Trust is a strange thing.

You're the kind of man that everyone naturally trusts. People instinctively feel comfortable in your presence, safe from the evils of the world. They trust you enough to pour out their hearts to you, their life stories, even when those stories are so raw and caustic that they could never even admit them to themselves. You're that kind of man, Horatio.

How many people have you told your story to? Oh, I know, anyone that knows your background can't blame you for not sharing. I never could, at least, but the fact remains.

You always said that you chose to trust, but verify. I don't think that that's really trust. Trust is implicit and unconditional, and requires no verification. You would say that finding proof is only responsible. You are the LT, after all. Taking words at face value would be dangerous. You're right, of course - you always are - but I don't think that's all of it.

You believe in a lot of things. You believe that your team will have your back, even as you cover theirs. You believe that people care for you, and that they are worth caring for in return. You believe that humanity is still inherently good, even when you are confronted every day by the slimiest specimens known to mankind. But trust is different from belief, Horatio Caine, and I don't think you trust in very many people at all.

For a while, I almost thought I was one of them.
