Summary – Jack and Elizabeth talk about stupid things before getting drunk on rum!
The Island Soaked in Rum
Elizabeth Swan suddenly wished that she could be anywhere besides where she was. The sound of the Caribbean waves hitting the snow white sand was relaxing, it was constant, it would caress the beach like a lover forever and ever; meanwhile, Elizabeth knew that she herself would move on with her life…if there was any after the mess she had got herself into.
She sighed and sat down, the bottle of rum Jack had given her abandoned at her side. She didn't even WANT to think about that bleeding pirate! He was a jerk and insensitive as well. The least he could do was tell her that they would get off the island because….because….because he was CAPTAIN JACK SPARROW!
She threw a handful of sand; she did not want to giver herself that insane answer because it wasn't an answer at all. It was a line that he had probably come up with because he usually didn't have any good answers for anything. She could hear him humming though, it was tuneless and he didn't remember any of the words.
Elizabeth stretched out on the soft sand; her hand found a sand dollar, it was whole. She cleaned it off and looked at it. Soft foot steps came up to her then and Jack sat down, he had an old machete knife in his hand, and two coconuts.
"This came in handy, last time I was here," he said.
"Oh?"
"Yeah, at least them palm trees don't mind livin' here," he replied.
"What do you know about sand dollar?" Elizabeth suddenly asked. She sat up with some speed as her face went suddenly red.
"Why ask such an inane question, luv?" Jack asked.
"Oh, I don't know," Elizabeth replied.
"Well there is a couple o' theories to that," Jack replied.
"Tell me? Please?" Elizabeth asked, all she wanted to do was talk about something completely stupid so that she didn't have to think up something clever to get them off of the island.
"Well, I used ta know a man in New York, you see, he called 'imself a scientist. Don't know if he was or not, any road, he said that sand dollars were actually small Echinoids. Said that when they lived, their shell had a layer of velvet, and when they died, the velvet would die also and there ya go, a sand dollar," Jack said.
"And the second?" Elizabeth asked. Jack broke a whole in one of the coconuts and gave it to her, she took a sip of the milk. It was different, that was for sure.
"Mermaids, well, mer-people, if ye want to be politically correct; they make a lot of things and they sell these things to other of their own species, savvy? However, they can't ever make up their minds as to what is good to trade for what and tend to get into fights," Jack said.
"Really?" Elizabeth raised and eye brow.
"Aye, any road, they made sand dollars to help them with this little problem of theirs, in fact…"Jack trailed off; he reached into one of his abandoned boots and pulled out a little dagger. It was exquisite, it had a jade handle with diamonds along the spine. The blade was sharp, and it looked as if it had never seen a day of use.
"I bought this off a mer-man, he needed about five sand dollars, I had collected them and once he showed me this beauty – well, I bought it," Jack said, he handed the blade over to Elizabeth for her to look at.
"It's beautiful, how'd they do it?" she asked.
"That, my luv, is something that not even the great Jack Sparrow will ever know," Jack shrugged.
They finished their milk in silence and then Jack kindly broke Elizabeth's open o that she could eat what was inside. When they were finished, they started on the rum bottles.
"Jack," Elizabeth said.
"Aye?"
"Let me teach you a song…."
