Summary: Ahh, read and see

Derek wandered the dark halls of the maternity ward on Christmas. The doors were closed and lights turned out, new mothers and babies sleeping peacefully and waiting for Christmas morning. The hallway was glowing with the lights of tiny golden bulbs, giving the area a heavenly glow.

He sighed and stowed his hands deep in the pockets of his lab coat, clearly this wasn't how Christmas was supposed to be. It wasn't supposed to be about working late on Christmas ever to avoid people; it was supposed to be about family and love.

He scoffed at himself, if anyone could hear his thoughts…

He looked up slightly as he heard soft singing emerging from a room at the end of the hall.

He recognized the room; it was an older nursery that wasn't used often. It contained a few extra bassinets and a couple of old rocking chairs. Following the strains of sweet song he strolled to the end of the hallway and leaned up against the frame of the door.

He couldn't help but smile softly as he saw his ex – wife standing in the middle of the room cradling a small pink bundle. She shifted slowly from foot to foot, dancing in some sort of mock waltz, her voice filling the deserted room.

He noticed at that very moment just how very beautiful she was. She wore only a long sleeved, green t shirt and jeans topped off with white runners. Her outfit surprised him; Christmas was usually one of her more "fancy" times, so to speak. Her red hair tumbled over her shoulder and strands of it hung over her face, masking her eyes.

As she turned slowly the hair fell away from her face and Derek saw the tell tale marks of tears dripping down her pink cheeks. He felt his heart clench as she lifted a finger up to brush away the stray tears. She turned again and he crept up behind her then slipped his arms around her waist.

She didn't startle but merely stopped singing for a moment.

"Don't stop." Derek murmured in her ear and she continued to sing softly until the end of her song.

"What are you doing here?" She questioned softly.

"Looking for you."

He reached up to her face and brushed away a stray tear from her face,

"She's dying isn't she?" He asked gently, looking down at the tiny body cradled in the crook of Addison's arm.

She nodded silently and raised a hand to brush her finger across the baby's cheek,

"Mother's an addict, left as soon as she could. I didn't want her to be alone."

Derek pulled Addison over to one of the rocking chairs and sat in it before pulling her onto his lap. She curled up against his and laid her head on his shoulder, all the while being careful not to disturb the child.

And out of the silence she whispered softly, "I'm sorry."

He gently pushed her hair back and kissed her forehead, letting her know all was forgiven,

"I know baby, I know."
