Chapter One
Dequa
Dequa felt the warm teeth sink into her fur when she saw burn-sun come to the mountains. Gesuqu hobbled to her almost rushing outside. Kestulu was still sleeping until Dequa came prodding over nudging her with her nose.
"Mother wake up I wanna play outside," Dequa mumbled.
"Mother will take forever c'mon Dequa!" Gesuqu cried.
Gesuqu ran outside to the Great Whispering Bamboo. The flat-faces cooed over her brother. Dequa and Gesuqu came to the zoo only when they were a moon old. Kestulu excepted the fact and told her cubs were born here. Dequa walked over to the elder , Flushiki, so she can hear the story about the bear in the oak.
"Flushiki can you tell me about the story about the bear in the bamboo?" Dequa huffed.
Flushiki shook his head to shake away the sleep. "If your really want to know then I will tell you," He hollered to get Gesuqu's attention.
Gesuqu came pounding over. "Alright little ones, That bear in the bamboo is the spirit of Zausci," Flushiki declared "Zausci was my father long ago, you see when you die your spirit hides in the bamboo we eat for us to grow big and strong like your father."
They stared at Yukon then back at Flushiki. "Is Zausci's spirit in the Great Whispering Bamboo?" Dequa asked.
Flushiki nodded. "When he died from being shot by flat-faces that bamboo changed from a green to a blood red," He explained "His spirit protects us to this very day, and his sister Navo hides in the sun to guide our spirits to the Great Bamboo Forest."
Dequa and Gesuqu stared at him in astonishment.
"I think these two should get something to eat," Kestulu nudged her cubs to the piles of bamboo.
"Is it really true mother, that bamboo has a spirit in it!" Dequa retorted.
Her mother sat down beside Yukon "His stories are true, but they seem a little over reacted," Kestulu grunted.
Dequa crawled back to her den with Kestulu by her side. She huddled up beside her brother and snuggled in the bump of her mother's belly. She closed her eyes and saw blackness. Then a sharp squeal coming outside her den. Her father and mother jerked their heads up scrambled out of the den.
"Help! There's a grizzly in my den," someone shrieked.
Dequa recognized that voice. It's was Flushiki, maybe it was one of his dreams. Dequa came scrambling out of her den finding a male grizzly twice her size. Blood splattered the den and came from the grizzly's mouth.
Flushiki lay on the floor unmoving on the den floor. Her mother and father swiped at the grizzly. The grizzly killed her father but then it stomped out of the den and fell. Every light shone in their pit. The flat-faces looked shocked and came down and removed the carcasses.
"Thank the sun spirit you and Gesuqu are okay and that your father and Flushiki will have their spirits in these bamboo trees," Kestulu sighed.
