"Ryuk…"
The 69 year old Light spoke the word as though it hurt.
"Eh?" Ryuk the Shinigami replied back in his deep, scratchy voice.
"Kill me…"
"What?"
Ryuk was taken by surprise. Light had always tried to stay alive no matter what. He was the god of a new, clean world. Free of crime, free of danger. Anybody who "sinned" as he called it would be found the next day, having died of a heart attack.
"I said kill me… Kill me with your notebook… I wish to not continue with a life that takes other lives… It is useless. Miserable." Light Yagami looked down at his nearly completely full Death Note. 510,248 lives he had taken… He kept count, ever since that fateful school afternoon in 2004.
"Whatever you say kid. But you do realize that you could never go to heaven or hell, right?" Ryuk spoke quietly in hope that Light would change his mind.
"I understand Ryuk. I know what awaits me on the other side. And I am ready."
"So that means this is the end of all the amusement?"
"Yes."
"Fine…" Ryuk grumbled as he took a seat on a nearby chair and crossed his legs. He withdrew his crumpled bone-and-feather pen, dipped it in a rotten ink pouch and scribbled down "Yagami Moon" in his Death Note. He watched as Light clutched his heart and tipped over in his chair, and slowly went limp.
Light awoke in the middle of a dark field with a gunpowder sky and black trees with silver wilting flowers.
He touched his face. He was exactly the same as he was when he first found the Death Note. Light gazed around the plane until he found Ryuk, sitting with his legs crossed on an old charcoal stump.
"R-Ryuk?" He clutched his heart. He felt like he was having a heart attack. "W-What is happening to me?"
"You are being punished, kid."
"But… But I thought…"
Ryuk giggled with a high and low at the same time layered chortle. "You thought you would be able to become a Shinigami? Hah! Human Swine who use Death Notes only deserve to fall into nothing."
"But Ryuk?" Light collapsed onto the hard and dead ground as he felt like he was being plowed down by a truck.
"Yeah, kid?"
"How could you…" Light's eyes went wide as he stood up straight, as he felt multiple heart attacks and effects of disease, the ways he punished criminals in his early years. He gently shut his eyes and felt his lips curl into a sneer.
"Eh?" Ryuk said puzzled.
"510,248… That is the number of people I killed in my lifetime. And I have already deduced that I will feel the pain of all the people I punished with the Death Note, and then I will descend into eternal darkness. Am I correct, Ryuk?"
"Eh, yes. Once you have turned to nothing, though, all memory of you will be wiped from human history. Nobody will remember Kira."
"But Ryuk, you don't realize this… As long as I am experiencing all the pain that I inflicted, I will exist. A full 52 years I have left in existence…"
"What are you planning, kid?"
Light straightened up and laughed his high, cold laugh.
"Well then… I will seek out the king of the Shinigami, I will persuade him to keep me alive, and I will help him rebuild the Shinigami World from the bottom, and this world will return to life like it should be!"
Ryuk laughed. "Ooh, so I guess this isn't the end of the fun!"
Light stared at Ryuk from under his matted amber hair. "Yes Ryuk… I showed you the recreation of the human world, and I will do the same to the Shinigami Realm… Let us go Ryuk."
"Ku, Ku, Ku…" Ryuk chortled as he took flight and hovered along with Light, into the dark sun of the Shinigami World, to the tower of the Shinigami King, and beyond… The savior of realms, Light Yagami, Kira.
