Harry had been watching the small slit of light at the bottom of his door, for nearly 45 minutes. He wanted to make sure all of the Dursleys were in bed before he snuck out. He had devised a plan earlier in the day. All he had to do was wait for everyone to go to bed and then sneak out. When Harry had turned nine, they had given up on locking his cupboard door; Uncle Vernon had seen it as to much of a hassle for every time he threw Harry in. So that wasn't an issue he needed to worry about. He packed his small backpack and then slowly crept out of the house. Hoping he would never have to come back, the small boy started sprinting away when he got to the sidewalk.
He wasn't sure how long he had even been walking; it had to have been hours since he'd last seen Privet Drive. But he wasn't all too concerned that Privet Drive wasn't in his visibility. After he walked on even further, he decided to stop for a bit, as he was tired, hungry, and in desperate need of the loo. He realized then, that he was at a crossroads. He looked to his left, and saw what looked like more cul-de-sac , deciding he'd had enough of that , looked to his right, he saw what looked like a public park. Opting with the right, Harry quickly stalked off in that direction.
When he came to the park, Harry was quite delighted to find a public bathroom, a plum tree, and a playground. He figured after using the bathroom and eating a few plums, he could rest for the night in a tunnel on the playground. After reaching this decision, he suddenly realized, besides this tree, he had nothing to eat. Tears quickly sprang to his eyes at this thought. He quickly pushed them away, because Uncle Vernon had said Freaks shouldn't be allowed to cry. When he reached the tunnel, he was quickly filled with dread when he realized the tunnels were filled with muddy water. Deciding he'd have to find somewhere else to stay. He grabbed a few plums, and was on his way.
Harry must have turned down a thousand alleys by now. He turned back onto a street with lamp posts, considering it was increasingly dark by now, compared to earlier at the park. Deciding he was tired of walking, he stopped in the middle of the streets. He turned and walked through a few people's yards until he was behind all the houses. He spotted a few large trashcans behind what appeared to be a mansion, though was as good of a place as any and sat down behind the trash cans, and slowly nodded off.
