Heh, we need more Satou love. I know he's a minor character, but still.
For what it was worth, he wanted a professional job.
He also wanted to stay with duel monsters.
Satou knew he was asking for a bit too much - he was lucky that despite the state of his family, he was able to become a pro. A pro with a deck that wasn't the worse out there, but definitely wasn't the cheapest one could buy.
But still, he knew that there was at least something he could believe in. Whether that was fate or something else.
And it started with the library first.
Despite making money off of his career, it wasn't enough to pay for any books needed to become a teacher. Every bit of money made went straight to his family. That was the only way clothes, food, and bills were dealt with. Rarely was there ever money for something extra. And that meant money for any book that Satou would use for a maximum of two times.
Though, there was a little extra room for a notebook.
It was one of those one hundred yen ones that most people could buy ten of and it wouldn't make a dent in their wallet. These did, but they were for a good cause.
Before deciding to be a teacher, they had Satou's strategies and understandings of the game. There would be records of each duel he was in and seen.
Each deck in that duel would be written, down to the way each card was played. Every strategy was created from this. And it prevented the same failure from happening twice in a row.
It also gave him an idea for what he wanted to teach: strategies.
Not all of the time, but occasionally when he dueled, he ran into a luck based duelist. One who didn't have strategy that Satou could read. And when he ran into them, it always annoyed him. A duel was not something to bet on. There were too many things riding on a duel - family, profession, pride - for one to rely on luck.
And maybe it was because they didn't grow up well. No one taught them what important things could be riding upon just about anything.
And that was something he had to fix for the newer generation.

Luck never came easy.
Actually, luck wasn't even there. It was a label that seemed to be good and seemed to be what people called "luck." But then it just revealed itself to be the world, taking one thing in exchange for another.
He was officially a teacher in Duel Academia. The application forms went in no trouble, and they even said they were delighted to have a pro teach in their school. The exact words from Samejima were: "it would excite the students knowing that one of their most important classes come from a pro, and it'll spark their interests in aiming for the pro league," and that made him smile. He was going to teach kids how not to rely on luck, how not to believe that each draw would hold the card that you needed.
And then he lost his dueling ability.
While he knew he was going to be a teacher, Satou couldn't help but make sure his research was perfect. That he got used to teaching. That the way he would teach students how to make strategies was perfect.
During those days, he rarely got sleep.
And it all caught up to him. Right in a duel where a moment of rest wasn't allowed.
He was at least lucky, as people would say, that he had his teaching career secured when this happened.
But this wasn't luck. It was the world telling him he wasn't allowed to have two very nice things. And Satou accepted the world's judgement.
