1941
She tore after the boy, the son of a young Spanish scullery maid, heedless of her pretty summer dress or her loose hair that snagged lightly on the wild grass.
"Joey!"
He spun around, pulled a face at her and then suddenly disappeared. She froze. Where did he go? She panicked and ran towards the place where she last saw him. If he somehow hurt himself she felt sure she would be the one in trouble.
She reached the spot where she thought she last saw him, but there was nothing. She looked around, but there was no trace of him. Had she misjudged the distance? She didn't think so, but the field was big and everything looked the same. Suddenly nervous she called out again;
"Joey? Joseph?"
"Boo!"
She yelped with fright and spun around, he was standing right behind her, grinning wildly.
"Don't do that!"
His grin fell.
"You're not hurt, are you?"
"No, but… Where did you go, anyway? You were here and then you just weren't."
He smiled again.
"That's for me to know and for you to never find out."
He laughed at her and took of in the direction of the lake, forcing her to run after him again.
