Imogen trailed her fingers along the top of the makeshift casket, tracing the swirl that decorated it, and smiled to herself. She still couldn't believe that her idea had been successfully translated from a rough idea in her head to the solid layout in front of her, and all because of one Fiona Coyne. Once again her girlfriend had managed to make her wish come true, this time while her world was falling apart at the seams and Imogen was intent on pushing her away.
A pair of arms slid around her waist, and Fiona propped her chin on Imogen's shoulder. "Is it what you imagined?" she asked softly, breath hot against the other girl's ear.
Imogen sighed happily, relaxing against Fiona. "All that and more," she reassured her, bringing her hands up to cover Fiona's. She toyed with the bangle on her girlfriend's wrist for a minute, just gazing at the set around her in awe, and then stepped out of Fiona's embrace. "Let's go look at the heart!" she suggested, leading the way straight to the focus of it all.
It was even more beautiful than she had pictured it to be. She reached out tentatively to touch it and, upon finding it to be sturdy, grasped the bottom of it and ran her thumb lightly over the edge just to reassure herself that it was, in fact, real. She let out a little breath and then turned to find Fiona watching her with her arms crossed and eyebrows cocked up in amusement.
"Having fun?" she teased, and Imogen nodded, eyes wide like a child's. She glanced around her, drinking in every last thing that Fiona had managed to procure in order to bring together this wonderful dream for her, and then her gaze lit on Fiona again.
It seemed like things slotted into place all at once. Everything from the first time she saw Fiona in their drama class in Imogen's junior year to the tin foil makeover to how she declared that they must have been soul mates to the Frostival and their wonderful first kiss to how supportive and amazing Fiona had been for the past few days flickered across her mind. Her heart swelled until it felt like it was going to burst out of her chest, and she knew she had never been more sure of anything in her life.
"I love you."
Fiona's joking smirk slid off of her face slowly to be replaced by shock, and her arms dropped to her side. She suddenly looked vulnerable, so vulnerable, like years had been shaved off of her face. She glanced behind her unsteadily, like she was almost expecting there to be someone else behind her that Imogen was talking to, and Imogen nearly laughed aloud. She took a step forward and cupped Fiona's face, forcing her to meet her eyes. "Fiona, you wonderful, amazing girl. I can't believe you did all of this for me, especially after what I said to you. I just can't believe you. I love you."
Fiona's face remained confused, eyebrows knitted together, but then she relaxed all at once and broke out in a brilliant smile. "I love you, too," she admitted.
Imogen let out a quiet laugh and leaned in to kiss her right there underneath the stained glass heart.
