Prologue: Remembering Red
It was one of those hot summer days where the smell of hot dogs and fresh lemonade lingered in the air, making your mouth thirst as beads of sweat traveled down your back. Gaia Moore was walking through one of her favorite places in the city—Washington Square Park, which at this time of day, was chock full of people sitting under the trees, trying to make the best of the shade they offered. Few people were playing chess, willing to get blasted with the sun.
Gaia had just demolished three hot dogs and two large cups of lemonade when she decided to play a game of chess with an old guy. The game promptly finished in fifteen minutes, with Gaia standing up as the loser.
Man, I gotta brush up my skills. Gaia thought to herself, chuckling as she gave her opponent a nod and walked away. She was going deep into the park now, and fewer people were to be seen. Something stirred inside her chest. Gaia recognized it as fear. Although she didn't always used to feel this way, she could easily recognize the feeling. C'mon Gaia, it's gonna be fine. She muttered.
Gaia looked up, and saw a flash of red. Red? Gaia blinked quickly. Someone with red hair had run into the distance. Gaia felt the skin on her arms and neck prick, the way it always did when she felt something was up. Gaia's pace quickened as she tried to catch up to the red-headed figure.
She had been walking briskly for a while now, and Gaia had not yet caught up to the red-headed person. Frustrated, Gaia started jogging. And before she knew it, she was full-on sprinting.
Within a few minutes, she saw the red-headed person again, and this time, Gaia could tell it was a woman. She was dressed in a white top and black jogging pants. Her pace was quick, but Gaia slowed down so she could observe her.
Why is she botherin' me? Gaia thought to herself, squinting her eyes. There was something familiar about her. Her hair bothered Gaia the most. That shade of red...the way it moved. And then it hit Gaia, just as the woman stopped running and turned around.
Gaia stopped dead in her tracks, and gasped. Her mouth opened in awe as she recognized the woman. It had been so long, but the memory of her dead body was fresh in Gaia's mind. Gaia tried to speak, but as the woman started jogging again, Gaia mangled the words.
"M-M-Mary?" Gaia uttered finally. But it was too late.
Gaia quickly turned her head, looking around, as if trying to find someone hiding in the bushes with a videocamera. Gaia was so desperately hoping for a man to come running yelling "You're on Candid Camera!" But nothing happened. A light breeze whistled and the trees rocked.
And still Gaia remained there, frozen. The sight of Mary Moss in her head. Mary Moss, alive and breathing. How could it be? Questions pounded Gaia's head as she slowly walked away, in shock.
