Shades Of Grey
She lived her life by shades of grey.
The grey that was the colour of the early morning sky on a winter's day; diluted by the rays of sunlight that were trying to break through. Those were the good days. Those days were easy and playful, where mischief, of the good kind, hid just beneath the surface. She was as young as her age, laughing and carefree. It was easier to forget who and where they were on those days, the burdens they carried at such a young age.
When the grey turned dark and intense, like the swirling clouds before a storm, she became determined. Each time, though, she was no more used to it than the time before, but she was no longer afraid. When the grey flashed like lightening trying to tear open the sky, she was aware of the beauty behind the power. She was ready to fight through the harsh elements and cold that was inevitable, because it was all worth it once the storm had passed.
It was the colour of slate, a wall of stone, a barrier that made her ache. That grey was dull and haunted; it held guilt and pain behind it. It also made her angry. Angry that they had to do and see things that so many others would never have to in their lifetime. It was a war, and they had chosen sides. It didn't make it easier knowing what they had to do was right, what they had to do to win.
The colour of liquid grey that was her favourite; softer around the edges and hot like molten silver. Her skin would prickle from the heat and she became rooted to the spot, pinned by its intensity. Anticipation flowed through her veins and she became someone else, did things she didn't think she would ever do. That grey held her trust. Inhibitions were gone and every cell in her body felt alive. She was drawn into that shade of grey.
She lived her life by shades of grey.
She lived by the shades of grey in his eyes.
