I recently re-watched 'The Tholian Web' and loved Doctor McCoy's and Spock's outright denial at having seen Kirk's 'sealed orders', and I wondered about the conversation they might have had concerning it.
To coin a phrase: I thought it might go something like this:
Insufferable…
As Doctor McCoy left Kirk recovering in bed, he found Spock waiting for him in the outer room.
"How is the Captain Doctor?" Spock asked in the flat unemotional tone he always used.
"He'll live. We got to him just in time." McCoy replied. Spock gave merest nod and turned to leave, but stopped when McCoy said.
"He'll never let us live it down."
"I fail to understand you Doctor." Spock said the merest hint of a frown showing on his face.
"The sealed orders." McCoy explained. Spock looked at McCoy. His expression as usual giving no hint as to what he was thinking, although he appeared to be waiting for McCoy to continue.
"I don't know." McCoy sounded irritated. He turned from Spock to start re-arranging medical disks in the drawer. "It just annoys me that he thought that without him we wouldn't be able to get along." And he was right. McCoy added mentally, but it still annoyed him.
"It did…facilitate matters." Spock said. McCoy nodded, but did not turn around. Suddenly a though struck him.
"Although…"
"Yes Doctor?" The reply came back a little too quickly, McCoy noticed. Confirmation he thought that Spock did agreed him about Jim's inevitable smugness when he recovered.
"We were busy." McCoy started slowly. "I had to find the vaccine, you had to work out how to get us out the Tholians web." Spock didn't reply. McCoy turned to see the Vulcan looking impassively at him, his arms folded.
"You did re-seal those orders and put them back." McCoy continued.
Silence.
"It was just the two of us there." McCoy tried.
More silence.
"He need never know…"
"Doctor, may I point out that the Captain will discover that he was declared dead." Spock finally spoke. McCoy was certain, fairly certain at any rate that Spock was considering what he was saying.
"It was a logical assumption." McCoy said putting a little more emphasis on the word 'logical' so as to annoy Spock. There were some things that would never change. "And besides, you were in command; we had to escape the Tholians…" McCoy continued. Spock remained silent and thoughtful. Crossing over to Spock he stood just behind his shoulder and watching the Vulcan carefully, whispered:
"I won't tell if you don't."
