~As the sun also rises~
Sam was pacing the hallways, impatiently.
"Where did that bloody angel go now?!" he thought bitterly, he had come to dislike the angels, just when they were needed most, they disappeared. Cass should have been here for Dean.. After all he was his protector.
He let out an exasperated sigh, he was tired but most of all worried for his brother. This was wrong... Dean was his older brother, his hero, his father in many ways... he shouldn't be in that room, breathing through a tube! It was although God had an incredibly sick sense of humor. Sam glanced into his brother's room for what felt like the 100th time to make sure he was okay, only this time there was some one there already...
Sam tensed automatically, ready to attack, when he noticed the stranger was wearing a long tan trench coat. "Cass" Sam thought he watched the angel, trying to read his emotions through his body and to his surprise he watched as the angels shoulders slumped, as though he was utterly defeated, he hung his head as though begging for forgiveness from the form in front of him.
Sam arched his head in the doorway, he watched as the angel ran a delicate finger down Dean's cheek "I am sorry little one" he muttered "I am sorry that I didn't protect like I should have" .Sam watched as the image of ghostly wisps of smoke like wings danced on the far wall, they seemed to embrace Dean, comfort him.
Sam watched mouth agape; he had NEVER heard Cass shown any emotion much less to Dean.
"Samuel I know you're there" came Castiel's words, as he turned Sam felt his heart break, he had never seen a look so lost, confused and afraid in his life. The angel look worse for ware, his trench coat was a mess, covered in blood, he had a gash running across his nose and blood dripping down the side of his face and from the way he held his body Sam could tell he was in pain.
"We must talk" he muttered and from one moment to the next, Sam stood on the rooftop of the hospital Cass by his side looked on. Sam felt himself coming to grips with the situation, felt the anger boiling inside him but before he could say a word Cass interrupted.
"Sam stop, I know what you're going to say and I am sorry"
Sam stopped. The angel's words were so.. Honest and emotional, how could he believe he was lying?
"I was betrayed" Cass muttered "I thought I understood my father, his creations and was starting to find my place...I am told to have undying faith in my father" he continued "but tell me, how can I? When, his own creations turn against him, leave him? How can I have faith in him when the creatures created in his image suffer and pay the price?"
Sam was silent "Cass, I…" he began
Castiel shook his head "No Sam it is not a question you can answer"
The two stood in silence, waiting and watching as the sun came up painting the sky full of gold's, yellows, red oranges and purples. Sam turned to the angel, and was awestruck with beauty as he saw the shadowy outline of ghostly wings, trapping the colors of the sky within them reflecting them and showing the true majesty of God. Castiel stood there; truly God's silent guardian making sure the world saw another day. Time seemed to unfreeze as the angel turned towards the younger Winchester "may God have mercy" he muttered and the he was gone, leaving Sam with his thoughts and God's beauty.
~THE END~
