Disclaimer: I don't own Harry Potter. J.K. Rowling has written these wonderful books.
Sirius Black knew that he was going mad. He knew this because he obviously wasn't thinking clearly anymore. The only thought that was constantly running through his mind was: I am innocent.I am innocent.I am innocent.I am innocent… It had only been a week and he was already turning crazy.
At first, when he was being brought in, he was only angry. It drowned out all other feelings as it was so strong. Wormtail had betrayed James and Lily to Voldemort and then dared accusing Sirius of it. Unfortunately his little act had allowed him to get away; Sirius hadn't managed to kill him for what he had done. His rage had been overwhelming but eventually the Dementors had overcome. Then the thought of James and Lily had flooded in. For almost a week painful memories of their time together and images of their ruined house had tortured him… until his mind couldn't take it anymore. I am innocent.I am innocent.I am innocent…
Somehow the thought felt like some sort of protection. It came from a part in his mind that was more determined and strong than the rest. In some twisted way this part stayed sane.
Sirius looked up when the door of his cell was opened, assuming it was his daily meal. He was shocked to see a very familiar person entering, accompanied by a silver, animal-like haze. The man was being let in by the Dementors and stood a few meters away from his bed, eyeing him sadly. Sirius just stared back and didn't dare blink or move, afraid that the vision might go away. After a full minute the man finally opened his mouth, 'Sirius...'
'I am innocent.' Sirius interrupted him without knowing what he was saying. It was just the first thing that popped into his mind.
A flash of anger flashed over the man's face. 'How can you be innocent? You were their Secret Keeper and you told their location to Voldemort. How else could he have found them? The only way to break the Fidelius Charm is for the Secret Keeper to reveal their whereabouts.'
Sirius stayed quiet for a while. Somewhere deep in his mind he was fighting to concentrate. 'I... didn't do it.' he blurted out. He felt his mind being crushed by the weight of his emotions. He couldn't think clearly, it hurt too much. 'I am innocent.'
I am innocent…
This time the man looked at him with regret and pity. 'You keep telling yourself that Sirius. All I want to know is why? That's all I came here for. Why did you betray your best friends?'
I am innocent.I am innocent.I am innocent… The prisoner let out a wailing cry and started trashing around. His visitor backed away and, for the first time, looked overcome with true grief for the other man. The look of it seemed to calm Sirius again and he was suddenly hit by a surge of clearness in his mind. But before he could utter another word his visitor had turned and fled away.
'Remus!' Sirius howled.
A/N: A very short one-shot that I just had to write when it popped into my head. I hope it wasn't too confusing, please review?
