What if there were no secrets between people? Would the world be a better
place, or a worse place? Guess that's something we should think about.
Peter: I can't believe this
He slung the letter across the room and kicked his chair. He picked up his
computer and threw it on the floor with all his strength. He rubbed a hand
over the back of his neck as he knelt down to feel under his bed mattress
Peter: Thank God!
He pulled a joint and lit it up. He settled down against the wall and closed
his eyes tightly. He couldn't believe the information he had just received…it
wasn't possible-it couldn't be.
"I must have been using and didn't remember it," he thought to himself
disgustedly.
He looked up at the ceiling
Peter: What are you looking at?
He quickly jumped up and threw the joint under his bed as his mother walked
into the room. He wiped tried to wipe the smell of his pants and shirt. She
looked at him curiously, and he cringed in pain as he saw the hurt and
confusion in her eyes
Peter: Mom, I'm...
She held up her hand, motioning him to be quiet
Mother: Peter, you're only nineteen, why are you throwing your life away like
this?
He nodded his head, not knowing what to say. The room was spinning and he
couldn't think straight
Mother: Peter, your father has a huge company and there is a spot there for
you. You are such a bright young man,I don't understand.
He rubbed a hand over the back of his neck again. He loved his mother dearly,
and he, too, didn't quiet understand why he was doing this to himself, to
her.
Peter: Sorry, mom, I'll clean this place up and try to do better.
She smiled and nodded her head at him
Mother: I know you will son.
He watched as she left the room. He looked around his room. It was dark and
his clothes were spread out every where. Nothing was in place-including his
life. He walked over to his bed and laid on it, searching for the join he had
just hidden from his mother. He picked it up and began smoking it again…
Peter: I'll change later.
He closed his eyes, and allowed the drugs to take him to wherever he wanted
to go.
Peter sat straight up in bed. Sweat was dripping from his forehead as he
breathed hard. He wiped his brow and looked over at Sophie who was peacefully
sleeping. He sighed and slowly got up out of bed and began making his way to
the kitchen. He walked over to the faucet and filled up a glass of water. He
closed his eyes as he drank it. He thought about the nightmare he had just
had. It seemed so real.
Then again it was. And what was written in that letter haunted him nightly.
Peter slowly pulled the envelope from his desk drawer and opened it. He took
in a deep breath as be began to read it. He could practically recite it
because he read it every night after having the nightmare. He closed his eyes
as he read the last two words...
"I'm pregnant"
