Chapter One: One Day
Doctor Marbles was in a race against the clock. Trying to stop a lethal virus from spreading was not an easy task.
Motherboard had never been this sick. His own gut twisted inside of him, echoing her malfunctioning circuits.
"Well," she finally spoke up nervously. "Have you found the problem?"
Furrowing his brow in discouragement, the doctor raised his eyes or only a moment. "Negative."
"Well, I can't continue networked with this condition for too much longer."
"I know. And you can't go on stand-by either, because then the virus would take advantage of the hibernation state and use the opportunity to shut you down…permanently."
Motherboard's system jolted in shock. "What are we to do, then?"
Marbles hesitated to answer, for he knew that to do so would provoke an age-old argument. "If only we…"
"No." That's how old the argument was. She knew exactly when it was coming…and her answer always remained the same.
"But…"
"It's not safe!"
"Let the cyber squad handle it. It'll be okay. It's only for one day."
Hesitantly, but resigned, Motherboard sighed. "Is it our only choice?"
"I believe so."
Speaking slowly, trying to believe the words coming out, she replied, "Then we'd better send for them."
Smiling sadly, Doctor Marbles said, "It will be better this time."
Smiling weakly in return, she replied, "One day…how could it go much worse?"
