The words in italics belong to Billy Joel and the characters to Martha Moonwater.
She's got a way about her
I don't know what it is
But I know that I can't live without her
Oliver smiled as the soft music filled his car. Billy Joel's voice had become a comfort to him and that wasn't something that he would have said a year ago. He thought back to that evening in the DLO when he had heard the same voice, singing different lyrics, words that haunted him…
And so it goes, and so it goes
And so will you soon I suppose
He gripped the steering wheel and shook his head as if that would erase the memory. He found himself back in the present with a song that made him think of the dear lady he was on his way to meet. The lyrics perfectly embodied everything he felt for Shane.
She's got a smile that heals me
I don't know why it is
But I have to laugh when she reveals me
He smiled as he remembered the way she made him feel in the moments after he asked her for a second chance at a first date. He remembered the smile she flashed as she joined their Postables family on the dance floor. He thought about how that smile healed him just as the song expressed. He felt like spring had finally come and a weight had been lifted off his shoulders and found himself smiling, maybe the first genuine smile to cross his face since his first visit to the Postal Museum. Shane McInerney had blown into the DLO and changed his life, no, she saved his life.
She's got a way of talkin'
I don't know what it is
But it lifts me up when we are walkin'
Anywhere
She comes to me when I'm feelin' down
Inspires me without a sound
She touches me and I get turned around
She's got a way of showin'
How I make her feel
And I find the strength to keep on goin'
She's got a light around her
And everywhere she goes
A million dreams of love surround her
Everywhere
As each verse filled the space in his car he began to feel overwhelmed. He never knew that a song could so perfectly encompass everything he felt for, Shane. He had held her at arms length for so long. Even when he refused to call her by her first name in order to keep what they had professional he still found himself looking at her whenever they happened to help two people in love. He thought about how many couples had been given a second chance at love because of her insatiable curiosity and the deep commitment she felt in going beyond protocol to make sure that these letters and packages were delivered to the intended recipients. He would forever be thankful for the second chance she had given him.
She's got a way about her
I don't know what it is
But I know that I can't live without her
Anyway
He found himself parked outside of Shane's home and smiled as he looked out his window to see her swinging on her porch swing, on their porch swing. In that moment he knew that he couldn't live without her. He knew that he was ready for the next step in their journey together.
