When a tree falls in a forest, does it make a sound?
Every lumberjack knows that yes, it definitely does. rather large robot from outer space crashes into your house and makes a large hole in the roof, does it make a noise loud enough to wake you up and ruin your already horrible week?
That's a yes, by the way.
...
Ty shot up, groaned and rubbed her back. She had fallen asleep on her desk again. It had been happening more often since Monday.
She had no idea why she fell asleep in the weirdest places, but her back sure didn't like it and it took time to complain, day and night, it was a wonder how she slept at all.
What was worse was that her bed, not a few feet from her desk, wasn't much better.
The mattress was old and hard and her blanket was actually a thin, worn out jacket she had grown too big for, so when she did go to bed, it was not as pleasant as you would expect.
Ty's room itself was sparse to say the least. Only three pieces of furniture in the room and she was resting on two of them.
She placed her hands on the desk and pushed herself up on her black leather boots. Then she looked around for a weapon.
Whatever had woken her up sounded big. Really big. She wanted something to knock it over the head with in case it was hostile. No one messes with Ty and gets away with it!
Actually, she would have thwacked it on the head anyway hostile or not. That'll teach it not to wake her up on a weekend.
Her trusty wrench was sitting on the floor, next to the stool she had been resting on, that'll do.
"Now, where is that intruder?" she muttered, swinging the heavy metal tool over her right shoulder.
There were only four rooms in the warehouse-turned-home. The biggest one, the one the former owners must've stored their heavy machinery, was right next to her room. It was also the entrance, the intruder-if it was an intruder, would most likely be here.
Carefully, Ty turned the knob of the door. Creeeeak...
The thick metal door swung slowly, its cry loud and long, rust flakes fell like dandruff from an old man's head. Ty winced, something to take a note of: oil the doors.
She stepped through the door, not bothering to be quiet. The house was like an echo chamber; anyone inside would have heard the door opening, no use being sneaky when the guy already knew you were there.
"Alright, Mr. Whoever-you-are, you better have a good reason to be in my house," she called, the sound bouncing off the metal walls.
Silence.
Fumbling, Ty found the light switch and, still looking at the black depths of the room, turned it on, still talking. "I mean it, come out now or I'll-"
She stopped when she saw who the intruder was.
More like what the intruder was.
The wrench slipped her grasp and clattered to the floor.
When a rather large robot from outer ship crashes into your house and makes a large hole in the roof, does it make a noise loud enough to wake you up and ruin your already bad week?
The answer is unfortunately yes.
