I don't remember where this came from, and I don't know why exactly I felt the need to write this. All I know is that I did, and I wish I could remember. Well, I simply had to get this down for some reason, and while I know it's not fantastic, I do kind of like this piece. I hope you enjoy it as well.
Sitting alone in his chambers after Merlin left, Arthur thought back to the day his father died. A great sadness engulfed the kingdom as each citizen mourned the loss of their great king. Even some with magical gifts mourned the death of Uther, though there weren't many.
Soon after, Arthur was crowned king and he began implementing his changes- abolishing the laws against the practice of magic was his first act as king. He then married Guinevere, the maidservant once in Morgana's services. While the people first fiercely objected the union, over time they grew to love their queen, for she was very kind and proved worthy of her title.
Arthur's peace of mind did not remain forever, though. After many years of being happily married to Gwen, ruling Camelot with her and Merlin at his side, he realized he had made a mistake. He should not have married Gwen, for his love for her did not last, and he knew it would fade. But, the risks that would accompany loving the one he truly longed for were far too great to act on his dangerous feelings. Arthur had hoped his affections would diminish, slowly die until they no longer existed, making it easier for him to at least pretend he loved Gwen. But, sadly, Arthur's love for Merlin did exactly the opposite, growing with each day spent with him.
If only he had followed the feelings deep inside him, had done as his subconscious willed. Then he would not have to fear betraying Gwen or have to live with the agony of a marriage in which only one party was unhappy.
Though, Arthur was growing suspicious that Gwen, too, was at the very least experiencing a love for someone other than himself. Lancelot had always had a place in her heart, since their first meeting. The same could be said about Arthur's relationship with Merlin, on Arthur's part, anyway. That 'something' about Merlin Arthur couldn't quite place the day he met the curious manservant? That would be how Merlin had so quickly struck a chord in the king, the effects of which were utterly irreversible. Arthur simply could not fathom how a simple boy, whom he had never laid eyes on before in his entire life, could have such an impact on him from a few conversations of biting, and later fighting, words. And the king never would have guessed for the entire world that Merlin's effect on him would only continue to grow.
Just looking into the startling crystal eyes of the raven haired warlock and knowing the relationship he craved could never have any hope of being caused Arthur's heart to constrict due to the misery brought on by such a hopeless fate. Each day the king felt another small piece of himself die along with every hope of even a moment with Merlin that even resembled the life he was forced to lead with Guinevere for the remainder of his days. The death of dreams of the greatness Arthur and Merlin were destined to achieve, far beyond what they already had, being united, truly, as two sides of the same coin, should have been considered murder.
Some parts were a little wordy, I know. .
But, I would like to know what you think. Let me know in the reviews? Thanks for reading! Also, I'll hopefully be adding chapter nine of "The Trouble with it All" soon. Check it out if you haven't already, and review please! They make the writing...idea...world go round?
Yeah, I don't know either...
*Oh, insert some clever disclaimer here. Nearly forgot.*
