Nine Fifteen
Minato had called for a late emergency team meeting at exactly three in the morning. The small messenger bird that landed on Kakashi's window sill was enough to wake the twelve year old chūnin up.
Now he was waiting in the cold darkness of the field where Team Seven first met. He was in his ninja wear, suspicious and watchful eyes scanning the clearing. The sky was clear with the usual streak of millions of stars, the moon reflecting itself off of the stream and grass. It gave the area a nice feel.
But the Hatake didn't do nice. He felt uneasy and suspicious.
The note could've been fake—could've been alienated. His eyes widened slightly.
There could be invaders—impostors, intruders and enemy-nin.
The chūnin boy turned around, taking a step away from the tree. But the moment his right foot lifted itself off of the ground, his left followed and hit a wire. Inevitably, he tripped and fell forward. A blast of bright colors followed, and then there were loud noises.
He scrambled, only making it to his knees. Fireworks were blasting loudly, bright and beautiful colors being followed up by crackles and whistles.
Confetti was everywhere, ranging from bright yellow to brilliant neon purple. He blinked in heavy confusion, startled and not sure what to do or think.
"Happy birthday!"
Kakashi blinked again, and turned his head towards the figures three people that had said those two words in unison—Kushina, Rin and Minato. And there was Obito, too.
Rin and Kushina had happy expressions on their faces, eyes sparkling with excitement and teeth gleaming from the flashes of fireworks. Minato had a smile, his hands on his hips. Obito had a sulky expression, the stick of a lollipop sticking out from his lips with arms crossed over his chest.
Minato elbowed him and the Uchiha perked up almost comedically. "Huh? Oh, yeah…happy birthday," he grumbled out.
The blonde rolled his eyes, glancing and grinning at his second oldest student.
"What?" Kakashi managed once the fireworks finally finished.
"It's the fifteenth of September, dattebane!" Kushina perked up. "Your thirteenth birthday! Isn't that exciting?!"
Kakashi blinked dumbly. Dots connected, and he huffed irritably. He honestly had forgotten about his birthdate. He found no need to celebrate it now, considering it wasn't celebrated in previous years. He stood, glaring slightly. "At three AM?"
"Yes!" Rin chirped. She rushed up to him, grabbing his wrist and pulling him towards the exit. Obito guffawed as usual, objected, took chase and soon enough it became a race to Minato and Kushina's house.
They had cake—presents, food of all sorts, music, dancing and fights. The party ended at six in the morning, with Obito asleep on the couch, Kakashi with his head on the table and Rin on the floor behind the couch.
There was more confetti and party ribbons everywhere, remains of a food fight splattered all over the place. Kushina knocked out on their bed, and Minato was left awake.
He sighed and muttered something, grabbing a broom and a mop, absently contemplating the use of the vacuum.
When the trio chūnin woke up later that afternoon, they left. Obito went off to the Uchiha Compound, Rin went to visit her grandmothers flower shop, and Kakashi left for his house.
The Hatake wouldn't admit it out loud, but that was very likely the most fun he's had in a while…a very long while.
It would stick with him for eternity.
But a little over a month later, Obito died.
