If Eska could have, she'd have told Bolin she truly loved him.

With Harmonic Convergence over, the world had been opened, merging two realms into a singular reality, one where spirits drifted amongst mortal men. Truly, it was marvelous: after all, it had been nearly two hundred Avatars since spirits had been so accessible to man.

Yet harmony had not been brought into Eska's life: rather, her life had become disrupted.

"You don't have to do this," Bolin said, voice cracking. Eska could sense that he was close to breaking, but instead of comforting him, she stood opposite him, stance solid, pose reserved.

"I do. Being a noble is all I know," she answered, voice tight. She tried hard to think about bending her tears back, forcing the water back into her body. Noble reserve, her father had said, is the only thing that suits you.

"Eska, please don't," Bolin begged. "I… I love you. Doesn't what we went through mean anything?"

Eska turned her head, nodding. "I am thankful for your aid in both defeating my misguided father and also preserving the realm we exist in. However, I cannot allow myself to follow these feelings. They would take me from my duty, and be my ruin."

Bolin's mouth formed an 'o', and he nodded, sniffling. Tears rolled down his cheek, and his face was blotchy. "Wow," he whispered.

"Understand, I…" Eska was cut short.

"No. I get it," Bolin responded. "Truly, I do."

Eska exhaled, and nodded. "Then I-"

"You're such an Ice Queen," Bolin said, laughing. He wiped a hand across his face, lips tilted down into a frown. "I can't believe I even liked you." The words stung, scoring Eska's heart with their blunt edges.

"I…." she paused. For once, she had nothing to say. Bolin turned, waving a dismissive hand, and the words came to her.

"I will remember you fondly, turtledove." Yet it was too late.
