"And they say that a hero could save us, I'm not going to stand here and wait;
I'll hold on to the wings of the eagles, watch as they all fly away." -Hero, Chad Kroeger
Cid Highwind was dead.
So he was told, and so he had to believe. 27 bullet holes was more than enough to kill one of the world's greatest warrior. But at the moment, Cloud Strife had something much more important to worry about.
His life.
It had been 3 days since the attacks. It had started out an ordinary day, or so they had thought. Cid was giving a speech to Rocket town, over something small like a new road being opened, just another publicity stunt as mayor. So, Cloud and a few of the others had accompanied him. Barret sat idly, polishing his gun-arm with his vest. Vincent was his usual quiet and contemplative self, and Tifa sat adjacent to Cloud, their seats positioned on the back of the stage which Cid gave his speech on. So when Cloud saw a sudden movement near the front of the crowd, he immediately moved to stand in front of Cid. He saw the glint of sunlight off the barrel of a gun, as it was slowly raised. Seeing it, he took all advantage of the strength and speed he gained from years of being a soldier, and dove for the man, being sure he would surprise the shooter and stop him.
But he hadn't stopped him, had he? The gun barrel followed him perfectly, with aim that would have rivaled that of even Vincent, and still in midair the man had shot him. Squeezed the trigger, and sent a massive spray of bullets shooting through him. Without even a moment's hesitation, he had dropped the clip, loaded another, and redirected the bullets towards Cid and the others. The worst part was, in all the chaos of Cloud's desperate dive and Cid doubling over the podium, the man had escaped through the tightening security ring, even with his weapon. But the great Cloud Strife hadn't been able to do anything about it. He felt the bullets rip through him, heard Cid yell in surprise and then in pain, the loud sounds of returning gunfire that could only have been shots from Vincent Valentine's Death Penalty.and then nothing.
And so, three days later, Cloud lay dying in a critical care unit. His life had been hanging by a fine thread, and that thread was about to snap. Slowly, his heart rate began to slow. The vital signs monitor drew a straight line, and Cloud Strife, the world's greatest warrior, drew his last breath.
They say that before you die, your whole life flashes before your eyes. But all Cloud could see was those fateful moments before his death, and flashback repetitions of his friend Zack being shot.
From the behind window of the room, Zack bowed his head in a moment of silence as tears flowed down his face. It was time to find the others, and now his time to be 'hero'.
So Cloud and Cid are dead. What is the fate of the rest of the cast? And with our hero killed, who will avenge him? This is my first FF7 fic, and I beg you to bear with me on it. The storyline will develop, I promise. Please review and IM me at HyperionGauss with any comments.
