Inspired by my trying to explain the family relationships on OUAT to a friend of mine, and just confusing the crap out of her. Mentions of Captain Swan, Snowing, and Outlaw Queen.

You know those family trees they have you make at various times in school, where you label your parents, siblings, and grandparents? The last time Henry Mills made one he was nine, and it was very straightforward: himself, and his adoptive mother, Regina.

Five years later Henry is staring at the worksheet for his freshman year biology lab, wondering what exactly to put down. Unlike when he was nine and didn't know anything about his biological parents, nowadays it's just a little bit more complicated.

See, of course there's his mom Regina, and her new husband Robin, and his step-brother Roland. But then there is his birth parents Emma and Neal, and the curse, and that's where things start to get really complicated.

Neal was only in Henry's life for a short time before he died, but Henry has spent plenty of time with his grandfather, Mr Gold, also known as Rumpelstiltskin, who happened to be somewhere around 200 years old. And then there's the unbelievably odd truth that his paternal great-grandfather was Peter Pan, but that's a whole other story.

Moving on to his mom's side: Emma's parents, his grandparents, are Mary Margret and David Nolan. Very nice, neat, and straightforward, until you mention the little tidbit that they are actually Snow White and Prince Charming, and thanks to the curse that brought them to Storybrooke freezing time, are roughly the same physical age as their own daughter. From them Henry has an uncle, Neal, named after Henry's father, who is 12 years younger than Henry himself.

His mom Emma married Killian Jones, who thanks to the wonders of curses and one heck of a prolonged stop in Neverland, is chronologically about 20 years younger than his grandfather Rumpelstiltskin, although physically just a few years older than his mother. Oh, and when he was younger he was basically married to Henry's paternal grandmother, Milah.

Then you get to the mind-bending fact that his mom Regina is Mary Margret's step-mother. Meaning that on paper:

Regina is both his mother, and his step-great grandmother.

Mary Margret is both his grandmother, and his step-sister.

His mom Emma is both his mother, and his niece.

And, the absolute kicker:

Henry is his own great-uncle.

So 45 minutes later when the bell rang for the end of class, can anyone blame him if the worksheet was still blank?
