Yusuke was walking down the street, ditching school as usual. It was almost time for school to end and, after wasting the day in the park, he was heading back there to meet Keiko. As he was walking, he passed a construction site. Suddenly, he thought he heard a sound, like African drums. He paused, listening. There was the sound again. It was coming from the construction site.

He walked onto the site, drawn by the sound. He stopped in front of a large pile of dirt. He reached a hand out to it. Beneath the loose earth, he felt a box. The drums were louder now, calling to him. Completely under the spell of the sound, he clawed at the dirt mound with both hands, uncovering the side of a box. He grabbed the handle protruding from the side and pulled. The box slid out easily, and the drumming ceased.

He stared at the box, wondering why it could have been making such a strange, spell-binding noise. Suddenly, he heard the school bell in the distance.

"Oh shit! Keiko's gonna kill me!" he said to himself as he took off at a run, the box tucked under one arm.

"Sorry I'm late," Yusuke apologized as soon as he got to the school. Keiko was about to scold him, when the strange drumming sound filled the air again.

"What the hell is that?" Kuwabara asked.

"Yeah, Yusuke, what is that noise?" Keiko inquired.

"You mean...you can hear it too?" Yusuke asked.

"Yeah," Keiko and Kuwabara answered together.

"Few! That's a relief. For a minute there, I thought I was loosing my mind," Yusuke said.

"What's that box you've got there?" Keiko asked.

"That's what's making the noise...I think," Yusuke said, taking the box out from under his arm and examining it.

"What's inside?" Kuwabara asked.

"I don't know," Yusuke answered, looking at the lock.

"This is a pretty complicated lock. Let's let fox-boy take a look at it," Yusuke said, fingering the lock in his hands.

"Yeah, if anyone can open it, Kurama can," Kuwabara said confidently.

The group decided to walk to Kurama's house and ask for his assistance in opening the strange box. They walked in silence, each one absorbed in his own thoughts of what kind of demonic device could be contained within the box.

Finally, they reached Kurama's house and Yusuke rang the doorbell.

"Hey, Kurama!" Yusuke said with a smile as Kurama opened the door.

"Hello Yusuke. Kuwabara. Keiko," Kurama greeted them, also with a smile.

He stood back and let them enter, closing the door behind them.

"I suppose there is a reason why you have made me a house call?" Kurama inquired.

"What, you don't think that maybe we just wanted to talk?" Yusuke asked, putting a fake hurt look on is face.

"If you wanted to talk, you would have used the phone. Even I know that."

The group jumped as a cold voice cut through the conversation. They turned to see Hiei leaning against the far wall.

"Man shorty! Don't scare us like that!" Kuwabara cried angrily. Hiei maid no attempt to answer other then to utter a soft "Hn."

"Okay, you caught us, we do want something. Happy now?" Yusuke asked.

Again Hiei uttered a "Hn."

Kurama only smiled. "What is it you wanted?"

"Can you open this?" Yusuke asked, holding out the box.

Kurama took the box from Yusuke and examined it.

"Yes. Why do you want to open it?" Kurama asked.

Yusuke didn't get a chance to answer because at that moment the room was filled with the drumming noise again. Kurama almost dropped the box in surprise, and Hiei opened his eyes, staring suspiciously at the box. The sound was mesmerizing. Kurama found himself inexplicably unable to keep himself from even thinking about not opening the box. Even Hiei, who up until about five seconds earlier had had an utter lack of interest, felt as though he not only wanted to see what the box held, he needed to see.

When the drumming ceased, they felt slightly dizzy, like they were coming out of a trance.

"What the hell was that?" Hiei questioned.

"If we knew that, we wouldn't need to open the box," Yusuke said.

"Wait here, I'll be right back," Kurama said, leaving the room to retrieve a small pick to open the lock with. When he returned, he sat down on the couch and worked the pick into the lock. In less then five seconds a click sounded through the room and the ancient lock fell to the ground. Kurama was just about to lift the lid of the box, when Yusuke stopped him.

"Before you do that, is your mom home?" he asked.

"Um...no," Kurama answered, blinking in surprise at the question.

"Good," Yusuke said. When he caught Kurama's questioning glance, he added, "Just, you know, if it's a demon or something freaky like that, you might not want to open it with your mom in the house."

Kurama nodded to show he understood and agreed. He then slowly opened the lid of the box. Everyone held their breath in anticipation.

Inside was something long and thing, wrapped in a piece of cloth. Kurama took it out and unwrapped it.

"It's a board game?!" Yusuke cried, staring at the slender, wooden box with JUMANJI carved on the front along with the heads of a hunter, a monkey, a crocodile, and an elephant in four corners around the name. Kurama opened it up. On each side was writing in large red and black letters with a compartment at the bottom of one side. The middle was the actual game board. It had four different starting points that twisted and turned and criss-crossed over each other. The only thing the paths had in common was that they all ended at a large, black, smooth half-circle that protruded from the middle of the board.

"Jumanji," Kurama said as he read the writing on one of the sides of the board. "A game for those who seek to find a way to leave their world behind. Roll the dice and move the indicated number of spaces. Doubles gets another turn. The first player to reach Jumanji and yell our it's name wins,"

"Sounds easy enough," Yusuke said. "Lets play!"

"Yeah!" Kuwabara agreed.

Kurama nodded and laid the game out on the floor. Board games had never really interested him, but for some reason he was very interested in this one. He suspected it had something to do with the hypnotizing drumming, but whatever the reason he really did want to play. He opened up the compartment on the bottom of the side of the game board he had just read. Inside was four game pieces and two dice.

"You want to play Keiko?" Yusuke asked, but Keiko shook her head.

"I'll just watch," she said. The drumming had really scared her and although she was curious, she wasn't nearly that curious.

"Well, it's a four-player game so, Hiei, you have to play," Yusuke said.

"No thanks," Hiei said flatly.

"Oh come on!" Yusuke cried.

"Hiei, have you ever played a board game?" Kurama asked.

"No," Hiei said.

"Well, then this would be a good learning experience for you," Kurama said. Unfortunately, Hiei didn't care about 'learning experiences.'

"If your to scared to play against me, then you just need to say so," Kuwabara gloated.

"What?!" Hiei cried. Yusuke and Kurama smiled at each other. That had gotten him.

"Kurama, give me one of those pieces!" Hiei said, coming to join the others around the game. Kurama smiled as he handed Hiei a black ivory piece that was shaped like a rhino. He look a white ivory piece that looked like an elephant. Yusuke grabbed the black ivory elephant and Kuwabara took the white ivory rhino. They each placed their pieces at the beginning to one of the paths.

"I'll go first," Yusuke volunteered. He grabbed the dice and let them roll across the board. They landed on a two and a four, totaling to a six. Yusuke was about to move his piece, when it started moving across the board on it's own. They all stared and Keiko let out a small cry of surprise. The black elephant moved exactly six spaced then stopped. That wasn't all either. Once the piece did stop, words started to form in the black abyss of the glossy Jumanji ending point in the center of the board.

"They march and eat and march and eat; If I were you, I'd watch my feet," Yusuke read aloud. "What does that mean?"

Suddenly, Keiko screamed and they all turned. Keiko had jumped up on the couch and was staring fearfully at the floor. They followed her stare, and then all jumped up in surprise. The floor was covered with ants! They were already half-way up Yusuke's pants when he stood up.

"What the hell?!" Kuwabara cried as he stomped on the ants swarming around his feet.

"Come on! This way!" Kurama yelled over Keiko's screams. He lead the way to his room with the other's close behind, Kuwabara only pausing to pick up the game.

When they got to his room, Kurama, shut the door and ran to his closet. He retrieved and old jacked an stuffed it into the crack between the door and the floor so the ants couldn't get in.

"What the hell was that?!" Yusuke asked, still trying to get the last of the ants out of his pant legs.

"I...I think they came from the game," Kurama said, pausing as he said it because of how ridiculous it sounded. They all stared at him like he was crazy, a reaction he had half expected.

"Hey guys, I think he's right. There's more writing here," Kuwabara said. They all turned to see that he was sitting on Kurama's bed with the game opened on his lap.

"Listen to this," he said, and began to read aloud. "Adventures beware: Do NOT begin unless you intend to finish. The effects of the game will only disappear when a player has reached Jumanji and called out it's name."

"It sounds like no matter what happens, once we finish the game it will all go away like it never happened," Yusuke concluded.

"In that case, let's just finish this as quick as we can. It's my turn," Kuwabara said, rolling the dice across the board.
