I don't own death note.
Spoiler Alert for those who haven't watched Death note or haven't read Death Note Manga. Please don't read this if you are planning to watch DN, thank you!
The Wind Chime
The first time Mogi saw her was when she practically jumped on the suspect, whom he was assigned to trail; Light Yagami. Said suspect was currently lying in the middle of a street and above him hovered a girl.
Mogi couldn't make out what they were talking but he deduced from Light's expression that he didn't one bit approve jumping on him. And how can he not? That thud on the concrete did sound loud. Plus another body weight pinning him down. It must have hurt.
A few moments of talk, before finally Light Yagami and the girl left, walking side-by-side and heading towards the Yagami's household.
It didn't take two plus two to realize this, that this girl was also Light's girlfriend. Still it puzzled him.
"Another Girl?" He whispered.
While writing down the report, Mogi came to find out who she was: Misa Amane. According to the sources, she was a model and a pop idol. And was apparently a big talk in films. Something along the lines of making her a film star.
"No wonder she looked oddly familiar" he muttered as he browsed the internet pages, which were filled to the brim with her photo shoots.
It would be a great pity if she turned out to be second Kira. She looked innocent enough. But so did Light.
And everyone knows that one shouldn't always go for the looks. After all, roses have thorns, don't they?
The next time he met Misa, was when he was order to apprehend her. He watched her come down from the stairs through the tinted vision of the helmet he was wearing, holding the hand of another woman, who could possibly be her manager.
While waiting for her to come near, thoughts boggled his mind.
'Such a pretty girl could be Kira? Is she the one who murdered Yukita and other anchors?'
Detaining turned out to be a simple affair. Swiftly he grabbed her face from behind, putting one hand on her mouth while the other was wrapping the blindfold around her eyes. She protested with all her might, elbowing him and kicking him at his shins whilst mumbling incoherently against his palm. Once sure her eyes were covered, he spoke in a low tone:
"Miss Amane, you are being captured under the possible suspect of being the second Kira"
As soon he said those words, the girl in his grip froze as if electrocuted. She didn't struggle which all more confirmed his doubts which he was having previously; she was the second Kira.
Mogi then turned towards the manager, who stood shock-shelled, the bag and the files scattered around her.
"We are detaining Miss Amane because she's suspected of carrying drugs in her luggage. We are taking her in for further investigation"
That being said, he escorted the model away, not waiting for a reply from the manager.
He didn't meet her then after that. His job was done. Though he did get to hear about her from Aizawa who dropped in the police station for a brief visit.
"This Kira case is driving us to the wall. We are literally running circles" Aizawa grumbled, reaching for the coffee which Mogi poured out for him.
For a while, there was silence.
"How's chief? Is he faring any better?" Mogi asked with concern.
He was very surprised to learn this when he came to find out that the chief have requested L aka Ryuzaki to lock him up, as soon Light claimed himself that he might be Kira. But then he shouldn't have been surprised. Sochirou Yagami was fair in all aspects. If his son was in jail, so will he be, even when he did nothing wrong.
Either that or maybe he loved his son so much, that the idea of seeing him rot away in confines while he lived comfortably was too much to bear for him.
Aizawa shook his head "No, he's not fine. He's taking all of this too hard. And it's not like we didn't stop him. Dozen times Ryuzaki asked him whether he would like to step out or not. And all the times, he refused. He wouldn't budge"
"That's Chief for you" Mogi commented. He then asked;
"How's Light?"
"Not good either. He's been pleading and crying. Begging us to let him out" Aizawa answered, tracing the rim of the cup with his finger "It also hard for him….he's so young"
"And Miss Amane?"
Aizawa pursed his lips, but didn't answer. His face however did; that right now, she was strapped into a straitjacket, blindfolded and chained, hindering her from every possible angle. That she was constantly under surveillance camera, her every move being watched. It was downright degrading.
Finishing his coffee, he stood up and went towards the door. Hand on a doorknob, he turned towards Mogi and told quietly;
"She wasn't given water for three days"
The first time Mogi properly interacted with Misa was when he inevitably landed himself as her manager. He wouldn't have become her manager if it weren't for Matsuda's ridiculous stunt at Yotsuba headquarters.
Sure he has spoken with Misa before but that wouldn't be counted official. Taking someone in custody is not an interaction; period. Besides Misa didn't knew him because his face was hidden at that time. In short, they were strangers.
The golden haired model kept smiling at him from the backseat. Mogi gulped, gripping the steering wheel tighter and paying extra attention to the road. He wasn't used to staring.
"Uh Misa Misa?" He began, unsure.
"You aren't smiling enough Mochi. And you can call me Misa, you know" Misa utter.
'I am not cut out for this, but this is part of my job' he thought 'And did she just call me Mochi?'
Being exceedingly dedicated to his job, he braced himself. For the sake of finding Kira, he must do this.
Taking a deep breath and letting it out "Misa Misa!" He addressed her joyfully.
Too joyfully perhaps, because Misa was a little taken aback "Huh what is it Mochi?"
"Today you have an interview with Yotsuba group to see if they will use you in their new ad campaign! But remember! This is also an infiltration mission, so stay sharp!" he advised.
"Don't you worry, I already know about that" Misa assured him. Then she added "And of course, that means you can't let your cover fall either. You are going play the character of hyper and energetic manager, okay?"
"Right, Bring it on! Huah!" Mogi shouted as he drove towards the parking area of Yotsuba's building.
"Good Luck Misa Misa!" Mogi said, raising his arms and beaming brightly "I will be here ready to celebrate when they decide to hire you!"
Once the door was shut, Mogi let his arms fall down, sitting heavily on the couch.
'I don't think, I am cut out for this' he repeated.
Day one and he was already tired.
Day two, she really gave him the run of his life. After realizing that the girl in front of him wasn't Misa Amane, he immediately rushed outside and surveyed around.
If he didn't find her sooner, Light and even L is going kill him. How could he let her slip like that! He was supposed to look after her! Such a big blunder from his side.
'For all I know, she could be in trouble' Mogi thought dreadfully as he reached for the cellphone to notify the headquarters.
Mogi let out a sigh of relief as Misa played the recording which held Higuichi's confession about him being the Kira.
They were back at headquarters and Misa was safe. That was all that mattered and of course, making Higuichi fess up as well. The latter was extremely crucial.
Still it didn't stop him from requesting.
"Misa Misa?"
"Hm?" the girl in nurse outfit turned towards him.
"Please don't do this again"
"What?" Amane asked, confused.
"Don't ditch me like that. Otherwise I won't be able to protect you" Mogi explained.
To which Misa crooned "Awww! Mochi was worried about Misa! That is so sweet of you!" And with that she stretched on her toes and grabbed his cheeks, pulling them "You are so cute!"
"Misa Misa!" He wasn't used to affection like this either.
Letting him go, Misa posed, flexing her arms as if to show off her muscles "Don't you worry Mochi! Misa Misa is a strong girl!"
Mogi couldn't help but smile at that.
During the five years, nothing out of ordinary happened. Mogi continued working with the team who were still sought upon in catching Kira.
He didn't saw Misa that frequently except in rare occurrences when she came to say goodnight to Light in her short nightdresses.
He would avert his gaze from her figure, blushing, as she lovingly bade goodbyes to her boyfriend.
Misa was a beautiful woman. And he was a man after all.
'It's one thing after another' Mogi thought as he and Aizawa climbed the stairs towards Misa's and Light's apartment.
Near or N as he calls himself, implore them to consider the possibility of Light being 'Kira' again. And should they consider, they shouldn't exclude Misa out of this. She must be investigated too. Which was why they were there, knocking on a door. A minute passed and it opened, with Misa greeting them, wearing quite a revealing outfit with puffs and ruffles.
"Mochi Mon chi chi! Long time no see you two! Light hasn't been at home at all lately! So I have been super bored!" She told them, whilst swaying on the spot to some unsaid music.
After giving her a believable excuse, they combed each and every inch of her house to search for the notebook and found nothing.
Empty handed, the duo stood, discussing what to do now until Misa interrupted them, asking whether everything is alright.
"Oh yeah. Seems like it was just a prank" Aizawa assured.
Misa took a breath of relief.
"But just in case, one of us is gonna stay and keep watch over you for the next few days" Aizawa said cautiously.
"Really? Oh that would be great!"
"Mogi, why don't you go back to headquarters? I will stay on guard here"
"Huh? I am with Mon chi chi instead of Mochi?" Amane asked, pointing her finger at Shuichi.
"Hm? What's wrong? Don't you trust me?" Aizawa asked, raising his eyebrow.
"No! You are not just Mon chi chi without your old haircut" Misa pouted, grabbing the pillow and hugging it to her chest "You aren't cute anymore"
At which Mogi snorted. Trust Misa to say things bluntly.
"Mogi!" Aizawa grumbled.
"Yes sir! My apologies!" Mogi straightened up like a solider in parade. It was embarrassing if you look at it from Shuichi's point of view.
"Al right, you stay"
Kanzo never thought for once that he would be required to watch over Misa again. But for some odd reason, he kind of looked forward to it.
'Babysitting would be the right word here, not guarding' Mogi mused as he carefully diced the tomatoes with the knife on a kitchen board.
For the next few days, he hadn't been doing anything. At least nothing related to Kira case. He has been busy cooking meals for Misa or feeding her pet lovebird. Getting medicines from drugstore and running an errand for her by escorting her to the mall. He must be appearing less like a manager and more like her husband, if things keep on going this way.
And he wasn't alone in thinking that, because the very next day, Misa voiced out the same notion.
"Light doesn't know about you hanging around all the time, does he? I am beginning to get a really bad feeling about this whole thing…." Misa trailed off, a fork struck in her mouth.
"Ah huh"
"I mean I know that Light trusts me totally, but don't you think most people would start saying that I am cheating on him! Oh he would be so jealous!" Misa exclaimed.
"I really doubt that" Considering Light, that would the last thing he would be jealous of. Though Misa's answer took him by surprise.
"Why not? You are a handsome man!" the girl told him, reaching for the bowl of sauce "People might come to that conclusion!"
"Thank you" Mogi said, flattered. He didn't know how to respond further, so he became quiet.
"Hey Mochi! After this, why don't we watch a film? I will let you pick!"
One of the best things about Amane was; she became easily distractible. Probably one of the reasons why it was easy to babysit her.
"Mochi?"
"Yes Misa Misa?"
It was late afternoon and the duo was lounging amidst couches. Misa was reading a magazine while Mogi was analyzing the pointers of the latest Kira report sent to him by Ide.
"You never told me about yourself Mochi"
"What do you mean?" Mogi asked.
"I mean what music genre you prefer or what's your favorite color or do you have a family?" Misa asked, clutching the magazine to her chest.
"Why is Misa Misa asking about that?" Kanzo asked skeptically. The model lived in a world of her illusions, completely ignoring her surroundings and revolving everything in accordance to her preferences wherever it was possible. So it was indeed new that someone who were only concerned about themselves asked about others. And a bit weird as well.
"I guess I am just curious" Misa clarified, scratching her head "I barely know you"
"Fair enough" Mogi said, shutting the file for obvious reasons "What would you like to know?"
"Everything!" she yelled "About your family, friends, social life and tastes!"
Mogi gulped. That was quite a long list. Where to begin from?
Misa waited, looking at him expectantly.
"I am married…" he managed to say, once remembering one of the things asked from the list.
"What?!"
Misa was at shock. She literally had no idea that her supposed manager was married. Talk about upholding your professional lives, Mogi was pro at this. Which would also explain why, she never had an inkling about this at the first place.
"Yeah I am" Mogi said, quite amused over Misa's reaction.
"Sneaky Mochi!" the model nudged him at his shoulder with her fist. Mogi laughed.
"Is there anything else I need to know?"
"I am a father as well"
"No way!"
It wouldn't have been funny, if it weren't for her shocked reactions. They were hilarious.
"Who are they?" Misa asked, once getting a grip.
Mogi knew who she was asking about, so he groped inside the pocket of his coat he was wearing. Pulling out the photograph, he handed it to her.
"Awww!" Misa crooned "You all look so adorable!"
It was a family photograph. Mogi was standing next to his wife. Both he and his wife were holding one of their children in their arms. The children were twins.
Before he could thank her for the compliment, Misa spoke instantly "I wanna meet them!"
"Excuse me?"
"Misa Misa wants to see them!" Misa repeated "Can she?"
"Uh….."Mogi hesitated. Misa Amane didn't pose a threat. At least for now. They had seen to it.
He supposed it wouldn't hurt. Besides he would get to meet with his family as well. It's been such a long time since he last saw them.
"Sure Misa Misa. My family would be delighted to meet you"
"Yay!"
"I still can't believe Misa Amane is going to have dinner with us!" Himoru, wife of Mogi commented, while putting silverware upon the folded napkins.
"Well believe it honey, she's gonna be here any minute now" Mogi said, lighting up the candles on the silver stands.
The door bell rung precisely at 8'o clock. Mogi opened it and found Misa standing on a threshold, holding a couple of things; a champagne bottle with a pink ribbon tied to the neck of it, a fresh bouquet of yellow roses and a nicely wrapped box.
"Misa?!" What was this?
"Good evening Mochi!" Misa greeted cheerfully, pushing the bottle and box in his arms.
"Greetings Miss Amane! It's an honor to finally meet you!" Himoru smiled, coming from behind.
"Pleasure is all mine!" the model bowed down respectfully, before stepping forward and giving flowers to Mrs. Kanzo.
"Uh Misa Misa….what's this?" Mogi asked confusedly, eyeing the contents which were bestowed to him.
"Housewarming presents! Misa Misa thought to gift them to you for inviting her to your house" She beamed.
Mogi felt himself going red "Thank you…." He stammered. To think he had figured out Misa Amane, he really hasn't. He wasn't expecting this.
"This way Miss Amane" Himoru said gently, leading her towards the lounge room.
"You can call me Misa, Mrs. Kanzo. No need for formalities!"
"Oh? Oh okay. I will remember that"
The evening went good, much to Mogi's astonishment. They pretty much talked about everything while sitting upon the sofas, sipping the cocktail drinks which Mogi's wife served them. When the twins join them, Misa became overjoyed at the sight of them.
"They are so cute!" Misa said, once she has done squishing them her hugs in adoration. As it turns out, Misa was surprisingly good with kids. She played with them by making a building out of blocks and columns of legos. Talked with them about their favorite cartoons. Mogi had to step out for a moment to assist his wife. When he came back, he found the model and his kids engrossed in making dolls.
"Carefully we pull out the needle and ta-da!" Misa let out a cry of achievement.
"What's going on?"
"Daddy look! Misa chan made a teru teru bozu that looks like me!" his daughter Kyou went to him, holding out the doll "Isn't it pretty?!"
"It sure is" Mogi smiled.
"She made one for me as well" his son Noburu said, peering at the doll cradled in his dimpled hands.
"The kids loved it!" Misa stated, proud of her handiwork.
"Are you sure you don't want me to drop you at your home?" Mogi asked anxiously. They were standing near the gate, waiting for the cab.
"Don't you worry Mochi!" Misa assured him, zipping up her jacket "Misa Misa is old enough to go home alone now"
"But…." Mogi was however interrupted by his daughter.
"Come back soon Misa Chan!" Kyou shouted from the porch, waving at her enthusiastically. Beside her stood Himoru and Noburu as well. Himoru was waving too, but Noburu was peeking at her from behind his mum. The boy was still shy around her.
Misa blew a kiss at them "Hai! I will!"
Still waving, she said quietly "You have a very beautiful family Mochi"
Mogi looked at her, but now he was seeing more than that.
Behind that façade of pop star and makeup, lied a person who dreamt of simple things and yearned for love.
After seeing her off, Mogi came inside and found his wife was busy in unwrapping the box. It contained a wind chime.
"Oh my! It's so pretty!"
And it was. The suspended set of metal tubes was in color of red and black, which were attached to the piece of black wood. The piece had a string which was to be used in hanging around the peg. Intricate white painting was done on the rods. Upon closer look, it was found out that it consisted of patterns of flowers, leaves and a pair of dragons.
"I am going to hang this on our porch. It would look lovely so there! What do you think?" Himoru asked.
"I think it's a great idea!"
And so it was hung there, on the hook which was nailed to the post of porch. The breeze went by it, to which the tubes lightly swayed, side by side, creating a soft tune of bells.
I don't like Ms. Takada simply because she's associated with Kira, Mogi told himself firmly while waiting outside of the restaurant, where Misa and Kiyomi were having dinner.
Ever since Kiyomi came under the light of Kira investigation, it was kind of unavoidable that they wouldn't have interactions.
Kiyomi was everything. She had grace and charm and was certainly polite, but for some reason Mogi didn't like her one bit.
Maybe it has to do something with working as an intermediary for Kira. Or she gave that mean girl vibe thing.
Oh who was he kidding? Truthfully be told, he didn't like her, simply because Misa Misa despised her.
Misa's influence is certainly rubbing on me if I am thinking like that, Kanzo mused. He then glanced towards the door.
Mogi was slightly apprehensive about this whole thing when Takada invited Amane for dinner. He knew certain motives lied behind this, but he didn't voice them out because he knew Misa wouldn't heed them anyway. Said person was already reactive whenever she saw the spokesperson anywhere.
Just then the door opened and out came Halle, the bodyguard and Kiyomi. Mogi glared at them as they walked in front of him. He could have sworn he saw a smirk playing on Kiyomi's lips. Oh yeah, she was a mean woman.
"Hey Mochi!"
Mogi glanced towards the entry and saw Misa sitting on a step, holding a large bottle of Chardonnay.
"Thanks for waiting! Mochi! How are you?!" the model asked, before taking a plentiful swig from the bottle.
He rushed towards her "Ah…are you okay?"
"Of course I am! I won after all!" she said with relish.
"Won?"
"Yeah! It was easy!" Misa told him giggling, her cheeks appearing pink under the yellow light. She was heavily drunk.
Mogi picked her up, piggy back style, to which the girl let out a cry of delight. Inwardly he was relieved that nothing bad happened. Even though he knew that Kiyomi wouldn't have done anything to Misa, at least in a public place, one couldn't help but feel concerned over the stubborn girl he was protecting.
And perhaps a little sorry as well. For when he tucked her in bed, Misa grabbed his arm, stopping him.
"Light loves me! He did say he would make me his wife one day! That means he loves me, right?"
Mogi paused, stuck in a dilemma. Oh how he wanted to tell her that Light was not the man she thinks of. That he was the possible Kira acting under the innocent image he carefully constructed and was fooling them all this time. That he was cheating on her, by going late at night in hotels and was spending time with that uptight anchor. Even though, those meetings were done for the means of capturing Kira, one can not completely ignore the other possibilities. And how Light berated her by speaking ill about her in all those meetings. It was sickening.
He could have told her all of this, but the expression of Misa stopped him. Her face carried traces of pleading as if looking for some sort of validation to her assurances.
"Yes Misa Misa, he loves you, he loves you with all his heart"
"I knew it"
Misa then kissed Mogi on the cheek "Thanks Mochi! Night night!"
"Good night Misa Misa" He spoke softly, covering her body with a fawn blanket.
Who said, lying was an easy job. It wasn't.
The last time he spoke with her was on phone on 25th December 2010. It was Christmas and her birthday as well.
After Light died, Mogi didn't have enough strength to face Misa. How could he have told her a lie when he knew all along what happened in the warehouse. He was the one of the witnesses.
Because of this, he avoided confrontation.
Mogi reached for the phone, his eyes fixed on a date of the calendar which was hung on a wall. To call her or not?
After much contemplation, he sent her a text message, wishing her a happy birthday. Pretty much sure she wouldn't reply. After all she was a model. Likely that his message would get lost in so many wishes from her fans.
A minute didn't pass and his phone rang. It was her. Gulping, he picked it up.
"Hello?"
"Mochi!" Misa's loving voice echoed "How are you?"
"I am fine, thank you. How are you?"
"I am great! Thanks!"
They talked just for thirty minutes, but it felt longer than that. Mogi realized at that moment, just how he missed her.
"I got to go now Mochi san, they are calling me for the shoot" Mogi could imagine the pout on her face. She would be looking so cute.
"Okay Misa Misa, we will talk later"
"You can bet on it!"
"It was really nice talking with you. I hope we catch up Misa Misa"
"We will!"
They both didn't know they were saying their last goodbyes to each other.
Goodbyes are like that. You just never know, which one is the last.
14th February 2011
Mogi was sitting in his kitchen, eating breakfast. Today when he woke up, he didn't feel particularly cheerful. Maybe he wasn't looking forward to work, but he wasn't tired. In fact he was well-rested.
For reasons unknown, he felt his heart heavy. Today was Valentines Day. He shouldn't be feeling like this. Even though, he didn't believe in such occasions, one could always join the festive. He didn't felt like doing that either.
It was windy outside. Himoru was very nitpicking today when the time came to send children to school, dressing them in double mufflers and sweaters. The twins protested, but their mother wouldn't have none of it.
"You would catch a cold!" she scolded lightly.
Mogi picked up his mug of coffee, about to take a sip when all of sudden, a strong gust of wind flew pass by, rapping firmly across the glass of closed windows and panes. And then; CRASH!
Himoru rushed outside to the sound while Mogi sat still, petrified. He heard the gasp of shock over the howling of wind. His wife came inside, now carrying the damaged wind chime.
"It got broke! I can't believe I left this out on such a weather! How careless I am!"
While his wife fussed, Mogi just watched. He knew what was happening. Or already happened.
He came to her grave twice. One on a official funeral, another was a lonely visit.
In the former occasion, fans poured in from all over the place, crying. Some even carried posters, the messages in them expressing their anguish 'We miss you Misa Amane!' 'Long live Misa Misa!'
Mogi didn't look at them. He was busy looking at a young woman who was placing a kiss on the closed coffin. When she straightened up, he saw her clearly. There was no doubt about it. This was Misa Amane's sister. She had shoulder length dark brown hair and green eyes. Despite sporting different coloring, she bore so much resemblance to Misa.
Misa did mention about her once, but never went into detail. He only wished he asked about her more back then.
That was what was he left with now; unsaid wishes.
The second time he visited, it was nighttime. For a moment, he stood there, looking at the carvings on the tombstone; Misa Amane. Below it, some quotation was engraved as well, but he couldn't make out under the dim light of moon.
He wanted to say something but his throat felt dry. He couldn't come up with anything.
Such a pittance.
Mogi then closed his eyes and like a tape unraveling from a split reel, he saw it all; their first meeting, his first day working with her, then him guarding over her, calming her during the tantrums she threw and playing games with her.
To many it may seem that it's just a model with a manager trailing behind her. But they would never know, that a bond did existed between them, which ran bone-deep. The bond that of a friendship, that of a companionship.
Opening his eyes, Mogi kneeled down. Tapping the orchid flower against his forehead, he kept it on the grave.
"I hope you found the peace and love you were always looking for, Misa Misa"
The end.
I wrote this in the loving memory of the Gothic doll; Misa Amane, who died on 14 feb on St Valentine day *sniff sniff T_T
One of adoring things i found about DN was the endearing relationship between Misa Misa and Mogi. It was so cute and heart-warming! :D So while the rest of the world is celebrating Valentine day, i thought to write this :'D
Let me know your thoughts! :'D
