Disclaimer: I do not own these two wonderful human beings.
Remus didn't know what to do, even now that he was here, at the door. He wasn't sure if he should knock. He didn't know how she'd react to his return.
He did it anyway.
The door opened slowly, after only a moment or two—had she been sitting by the door, had she been waiting?—and he saw a flicker of surprise in her eyes when she saw it was him.
She hesitated for a moment before asking—and clearly pulling the question out of nowhere—"What did you say when you asked me to marry you?"
"That I wanted to spend the rest of my life with you. I meant it, Dora, and I'm sorry."
She nodded subtly, letting him in.
He turned to speak again, once she bolted the door shut. "I'm not asking for forgiveness. I know I don't deserve it. I just hope you'll take me back."
She hesitated again before she asked, "Why did you leave?"
"Because I was scared. That was the only reason I pushed you away, that was the only reason why I left. I really am sorry."
"Remus, understand that this is your last chance," she said calmly. "If you run off again, I'm not letting you back in. Promise me you'll stay."
He looked her straight in the eye, and said, without hesitation, "I promise."
