Susan had gone pale and very stiff. Beside her, Ernie frowned, then reached over to pat her hand in Hannah-like fashion. The look he gave Justin was mild, but reproachful.
"I'm sorry," Justin managed, feeling vaguely ill. All that breeding, and where does it get you?
He found he could only stand to watch Susan's hands. She was mangling her gloves, which she had worn even though it was a balmy spring day. Black kid gloves, black robes, a black ribbon through her plait. Susan knew exactly what to wear, Justin thought.
He shivered.
