Chapter 1: You Can't Be a Hero Without a Good Origin Story
BTW, the first chapter is really called "You Can't Be a Hero Without a Good Origin Story", but fanfiction is poop (wow i know, so mature) and wouldn't let me put in all those characters, so I had to call it 'Beginnings' instead. Grrrrr…
Here I am, giving you an OC story! I know, I know, I have other stories that I should be working on, namely Connected, Eternally (if you haven't read it, please check it out, I'd love to know what you think of it! *self-advertises unashamedly*), but, meh, the idea popped into my head and kinda moved in. Permanently. So I MUST write this, or else I will be bothered forever! I don't have a choice!
Robin: Uh, yes you do, you're just not asterous enough to make the right one: Not writing this plot bunny! Get traught, lady! Man up and don't give into the urge!
Me: *offended* What?! I am so asterous! It's in my name! And anyways, I would woman up, not that I need to!
Robin: *scoffs* Whatever, you fangirl!
Me: *glomps Robin* Awww, thanks! I love you, too, Robbie-poo!
Robin: Darn those mood swings teenage girls have! I think I liked her better when she was mad…
Me: *glomps tighter*
Robin: *gasps* Can't… breathe… *struggles*
Me: *glomps even tighter*
Robin: *passes out*
Me: *lets go*
Robin: *falls limply to the floor*
Me: *fake-obvious-acting-voice* *gasp* What?! Robin?! Are you alright? I think you're going to need mouth to mouth!
By the way, any alien languages are complete gibberish. I just typed randomly for those parts. Translations are in italics right afterwards! Also, the gibberish made mostly of random letters in the first Svo Tylik POV is the language of Graxos IV, while the gibberish made of more random letters in the second Svo Tylik POV is Svo Tylik's people's upper class' language, Opheya.
By the way again, this chapter has kind of a lot of POV switches.. This first chapter will also probably be the only third person POV one. I'm just not sure it's the tone I want for the rest of the story, yet it works so nicely for the prologue-firstchapter-of-sorts that this is.
So without further ado, I present you Chapter 1 of The Emerald Knight!
Green Lantern Svo Tylik P.O.V.
Graxos Ⅳ, Sector 2815
10:00 AM June 17th, 2008 (Earth Time/Date)
Svo Tylik landed on Graxos IV's soil, extinguishing the glowing green light emanating from his ring that surrounded him. Dropping down onto all four paws, he loped gracefully into the hospital for the criminally insane. Pushing himself off the ground, he took in his surroundings, noting the tense and seemingly nervous doctors and nurses rushing about, calling for various medicines and remedies. Letting himself into the grassy square between the Wards number 12 and 13, he took a deep breath of warm, fresh air.
"Hsyo fui na ysi filsnr sk tvwi abufv, Yn. Dujsge?" What was it you wanted to talk about, Dr. Dujsge? he asked, looking around.
"Yn. Dujsge snje ib ewjobfuisb acr tvsi fgei, Lantern. Bdh st:gb hhsi." Dr. Dujsge won't be responding any time soon, Lantern. But we're here. A mysterious voice answered, heavy with a Fliaaxen accent.
Spinning around quickly, Svo Tylik lashed his tail and growled at the large group of mysterious shadows hidden among the Gycafi Trees. "Pdni dinr snt lidtr. Suf." Step into the light. Now.
The deep voice chuckled. "Fu ysi shfi, Lantern." As you wish, Lantern.
Alani Nohea P.O.V.
Earth, Sector 2814
2:50 PM June 17th, 2008
Alani opened her locker hurriedly, shoving her Algebra II and Chemistry textbooks inside and grabbing her AP English, Creative Writing, and English Literature notebooks and slipping them into her embroidered messenger bag before slamming the door closed with a clang. Turning quickly, she rushed through the mass of chattering students and toward the double doors that lead to freedom.
"It seems like during the first half of the year everyone is reminiscing about summer and isn't able to concentrate, then the second half has everyone saying that they can't wait for the school year to be over and they zone out completely," she mumbled to herself, ducking to dodge a paper airplane covered in a questionable substance.
"I'd say that's true. But you must be at least a little bit excited about being able to relax for two and a half months, right?"
She whipped around, turning toward the voice that responded to her quiet statement, about to say that when someone's talking to herself, it means she doesn't want to hear anyone's answer, when she noticed who had spoken.
Kyle Rayner. Black hair like a raven's wing, emerald-green eyes, charming dimpled grin, he was indisputably the cutest guy at Calla Academy for the Talented (or CAT, for short). A transfer from Coast City, his looks were only a small part of his admittedly very attractive self. He was also straight-A student and overall a simply nice person.
Shocked and embarrassed, Alani blushed and tucked a loose wave of her dark chocolate hair behind her ear, gesturing towards herself. "Me?"
"Well, I don't see anyone else interesting in this hallway," he responded, amused.
Blushing even more, she answered so quietly Kyle had to ask her to repeat what she said.
"I said," she spoke, voice stronger this time, "Are you flirting with me?"
Now seemingly flustered himself, Kyle struggled to find the right words to answer her question. "If I say yes, does this conversation end badly for me?"
She laughed, shaking her head. "Depends on your definition of bad. If you are indeed flirting, I might be persuaded to stay. But if I don't leave now, my parents will get on my case for being late to my Hawaiian Cultures class at the historical center."
"How about I give you my number, and you leave now and make it to that class, but you promise to call me later?" he suggest, tilting his head questioningly.
"Deal," she responded, pulling out her phone.
"Here, I'll give it to you as we walk. Don't want you being late, hmm?" he said. "Okay, it's 808-24…"
His voice faded into background noise when Alani looked up to see a flash of green light fly down from the sky and land in what looked like the forest behind her house.
"Got it?" Kyle asked.
"Hmm? Oh, yeah. Right. Your number. Got it."
"Cool! I'll see you tomorrow!"
"Yeah, sure. Of course," she responded distractedly, already heading towards her house.
"Wait, Alani, the historical center's in the other direction!"
"I'll make it! I just have to check something out," she called back, jogging home.
Green Lantern Svo Tylik P.O.V.
Graxos Ⅳ, Sector 2815
1:30 PM June 17th, 2008
Svo Tylik dodged a quickly-moving asteroid, flying at top speed to Sector 2814. The band of a few dozen intergalactic criminals in hijacked ships followed him, barely 100 meters behind. They shot more bullets and laser beams at him, prompting the Green Lantern to strengthen the shield covering him from behind.
"Fysn ejs, fysn ejs urrhes e! Sector 2814!" Come on, come on! Almost to Sector 2814! he muttered, increasing his speed until he was darting between planets and moon almost too fast for the eye to see, even though it was costing him and the power level of his ring greatly. "Jka wusnf ltyanp bsi rhe Green Lanterns ir rybd turydi hdue?" Now which planet are the Green Lanterns of this sector from?
After more than an hour more of being chased by the criminals, Earth finally appeared into Svo Tylik's line of sight. He used the last of his energy to twist around and shoot a few green bolts at the ships following him in hopes of slowing them down and keeping any of the planet's citizens from harm. He dove into the planet's atmosphere, gradually losing speed and energy as he went, and called through his ring rapidly. "Green Lanterns of Sector 2814! This is Svo Tylik, Green Lantern of Sector 2815. This is a distress call, I have 53 escaped Fliaaxen criminals on my tail, repeat, 53 Fliaaxen criminals on my tail. I need help containing them, do you read me?"
Swooping down over a large expanse of ocean in search of land, he growled in frustration at the lack of response. "Green Lanterns of Sector 2814, do you copy?"
His ring crackled, signaling an answer. "We hear you, Svo Tylik. We're on our way to your location now."
Sighing with relief, Svo Tylik scanned the horizon for a place to land. Spotting an island, he dove down and quickly searched for some type of clearing, a place without people, to land and regroup with the other Lanterns. Noticing one, he swooped down to land when beam from one of the ships chasing him finally hit its mark, knocking him to the ground.
Alani Nohea P.O.V.
Earth, Sector 2814
2:50 PM June 17th, 2008
Alani jogged down her street, heading straight for her front door. She dashed up the steps to the porch and stopped in front of the door. Opening her bag, she rummaged around hurriedly for her keys and, once she found them, pushed them into the lock. Clicking it open swiftly, she slipped inside. She sprinted through the entryway, past the living room, and through the kitchen towards the back door. She passed her mother, who was chopping vegetables on the counter, barely giving her a second glance in her hurry to get outside.
"Alani, what are you doing home?" she asked, setting down her knife. "You're supposed to be at your cultures class."
Alani didn't seem to register her mother's words and continued on. Arriving at the back door, she swung it open and rushed outside, letting it slam shut behind her loudly. Breathing heavily, she hurried along into the forest.
"Alani, wait!" her mother called, pushing open the door. "Where are going, honey?"
Alani twisted between obtrusive trees, once again ignoring her mother's words. She ducked under a low hanging branch, heading all the while towards where she saw the flash of green light fall. She rounded one more bend on the makeshift "trail" and was about to continue on when she looked up to a sight a lot more alarming than missing a cultures class.
In front of her was some sort of furry, humanoid wolf-cat creature dressed in green struggling to get up. It managed to stand, staggering on its hind paws, when a trio of large, hovering ships landed in the clearing before Alani. Their doors slid open smoothly, letting out dozens of vicious-looking… things that roared deafeningly at the sight of the wolf-cat.
One of the biggest, toughest looking beasts brandished a spear, aiming it carefully at the exhausted one. Throwing it with a growl, it sunk home, straight through the stomach of the lean creature before her. It fell on its side, blood flowing quickly out of the wound.
In shock, Alani covered her mouth with her hands, attempting to muffle any sort of horrified noises that might seep out. Seemingly drawn to her movement, the wolf-cat's eyes flicked towards her, then met her own.
The creature's eyes were soulful, pure, and such a warm, deep amber that Alani couldn't look away. They spoke of truth, and unlocked all of her deepest feelings that she buried within herself subconsciously: She didn't actually like Kyle Rayner, she was just caught in the moment and not really paying attention to the words coming out of her mouth; she wished her parents would just open their eyes, she wasn't the perfect, traditional, obedient daughter they wanted her to be; she wanted to stand up, she needed to prove she was more than everyone thought –
Suddenly snapped out of her trance, Alani shook her head. Drawing her eyes back to the wolf-cat, she stood stock-still, barely breathing. The creature drew its left front paw slowly up to its mouth, making her notice the green ring it had on its middle finger.
"Ita… ki," it said into the ring, coughing heavily, "Ita ki sr-sre tog," She...is. She is th-the one.
The green ring slipped slowly off of its finger. It rose, and turned in Alani's direction. It hovered for a moment before sliding through the air toward her.
Startled, she stumbled back a few steps, accidentally snapping a fallen stick. The creatures from the ship looked up immediately, seeing her within a second. They growled, reaching for their weapons threateningly, about to attack.
The moment passed almost too quickly for Alani to comprehend what happened. The creatures rushed at her. She backed up into a tree. The ring slipped onto her finger, making the clearing explode in green light.
Alani screamed, pain taking over her body as the bright green light emanating from the ring enveloped her. Fully encased in the glow, she rose a few feet into the air and struggled against the feeling of thousands of tiny needles slowly penetrating her skin.
Quicker than it had begun, the pain stopped and the light vanished. Alani fell to the ground, gasping for breath. She panted, still on the ground, feeling like she had run a marathon. Slowly, she pushed herself off of the forest floor and looked down at herself for injuries.
Alani squeaked with surprise. She was now wearing black skintight pants, green boots, white gloves, and a green shirt with black sleeves and a white circle in the center of her chest.
"Wh-what?" she stammered, shocked. "Why am I wearing… this?"
Looking up, her eyes widened slightly as she took in all of her would-be attackers, unconscious, laying like they were thrown backwards. The wolf-cat was still in front of her, yet its eyes were glazed, staring at nothing. Blood pooled around its body, brushing against her boots.
"What the hell is going on?!"
And there you have it, Chapter 1: You Can't Be a Hero Without a Good Origin Story of The Emerald Knight! I hope you enjoyed, BUT TELL ME WHAT I GOT WRONG! PLEASE! CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM IS GREAT!
XD XD XD
Well, yeah. Poor Alani is completely confused. She wearing this really weird outfit, a ring just kinda flew onto her finger, and the clearing is full of unconscious aliens, one of whom is actually dead.
Hope you liked it, chapter 2 should hopefully be finished soon-ish!
