Burning...
That was the only word Ivan could use to describe how his lungs felt. After he fell through the ice he panicked and tried his hardest to stay afloat only to breathe in the ice cold water. One breath was all it took and suddenly he was swallowing more and more water and breathing in the rest into his lungs.
The burning! Oh how he wanted to scream!
The screams of help from his younger sister were just a background noise that he could somewhat hear over the sounds of the splashing water and his frantic coughing. After what felt like a forever struggle he could feel arms going numb and at the same time his legs had stopped their fighting. Ivan could feel his heavy jacket pulling him down. The small Russian boy clung to the edge of the ice as his final struggle to stay alive but every slowly his hands slipped and the black water engulfed him.
"Was this the end? ", Ivan thought as he floated downwards into what seemed like the endless darkness. He had seemed so heavy before and now he was as light as a feather yet still sinking. The small boy felt his eyelids start to grow too heavy to hold open. He closed them and seemed to accept his fate. "So this really is the end..."
"Don't you dare close your eyes!" A voice shouted from above him. "I'm coming!"
Ivan opened his eyes in confusion. "W-what?"
"You heard me! You're not crossing over to the pearly gates just yet!"
The voice had a southern tent to it's accent that reminded Ivan of the time his father had taken him on a trip to southern part of the United States. Where had they gone again? He couldn't quite remember the state but it did not seem to matter to him. Closing his eyes he let him mind drift back to that pleasant memory.
"OPEN YOUR EYES!"
With annoyance Ivan opened his eyes one last time for the voice and this time he was blinded. A gold light appeared before and latched up. All at once he was swept up. It felt like he was flying as he was pushed through the hole in the ice and into the outside world again. He immediately coughed and inhaled deeply. Someone rolled him to his side and he started vomiting up the water he had ingested. With a runny nose and watery eyes and rolled over onto his back and started to cry.
"There there baby boy I got cha." the voice said in a very soothing tone. "I'll keep you warm."
"The voice is so nice...", Ivan thought as he looked up at his savior...
Ivan jumped up in his sleep, sweat running down his forehead his breathing labored. After a moment he calmed himself down enough to realize he was just having that dream again. Running a hand through his damp hair he groaned at how hot it was. He slept in his boxers with the heat off and he was still always too warm. He didn't know how much more he could take. The Russian let out a long sigh and looked down at his lap. Every time he had that dream he always woke up right before he saw the man who had saved him from the frozen pond. Laying on his back he placed his hands behind his head as he started to think. There was no one at the pond that day and it was too far out in the woods for anyone to be just walking by...who was that man ...and why was he suddenly having this dream again after all these years?...
Alfred F. Jones woke up the same way he did everyday, which was cuddling next to his Godchild. If Alfred didn't cuddle Ivan at night how would he stay warm? He was needed in this department. Alfred didn't really sleep, being an angel he lacked the ability, but he loved to make sure Ivan slept well through the night. Since the day he had been assigned to Ivan he had never left his side. Well...that wasn't entirely true. Alfred left his side when he went the bathroom and when he was well...taking care of human needs with the help of other humans, but other than those two things he was stuck to his hip.
Their day started the same as usual. Ivan would wake up and check to see if the heat was turned on then he would shower and get dressed. Alfred would wait downstairs and try hard to influence Ivan to eat the most important meal of the day. It was always a battle to do so.
Being an guardian angel he could never make Ivan do anything that wasn't of his own free will. He could however persuade him to try and do or not do somethings. He was good at getting him to eat and well not so good at getting him to try and do other things...
Alfred watched as Ivan sat down with a bowl of cereal. The tall man sighed down at his food. "I don't know why I eat these everyday.I hate breakfast." Alfred could feel himself smirking as Ivan started to eat his Cheerios.
"Big brother." Ivan's younger sister Natalia sat down across from him and started to discuss business.
Alfred groaned in annoyance. No matter how hard he tried Alfred could not pull his little boy from this "business'' and it got on his nerves. The blond angel looked across the table to the angel who shared an equal amount of hate for the siblings work. He was a short brown haired angel by the name of Toris. He had been assigned to Natalia after she had been born. Alfred had never seen him so happy...then Natalia started playing with knifes ...then she got really really good at it and now she stabs people for a living and ever since then Toris had been a mess. The poor man always followed her around begging her not to do another job.
Alfred smiled a bit at him. "You hanging in there, Pal?"
Toris smiled a bit over to Alfred. "I am doing better. The other day I actually convinced her to let someone go." He looked down. "She let them run about a block before she changed her mind."
Alfred smiled brightly and gave Toris a thumbs up. "Baby steps man. You're getting there."
Unfortunately Toris did not return his smile but instead said. "I don't know how you do it. You're the most hated angel out there because of who your child is..."he looked over to Ivan. "Yet you defend him and take such good care of him and you even have a smile every morning."
Alfred laughed a bit as he looked across the table at Toris. "That's because I'm not giving up! I refuse to let Ivan be drug to hell! I'm gonna make him see the light!"
This time around Toris laughed. "I hope you keep that attitude because we're going to church today."
Alfred suddenly deflated. "Oh God no..."
Church. To most angels it was a place where they could communicate with God. To Alfred it was a place where all the other angels could glare at him. Alfred wasn't very popular. Actually, you could say he was very much hated among the angel community. A big part of it was because of Ivan and his love for killing others over little things like money and another part of it was because of him.
From the very first moment he died and had become an angel he had been an abnormal one. Angels had a code of wings that they went by. New angels got brown wings, older ones that were wise earned grey wings and if you really won God's favor you earned white wings. Alfred on the other had had been revived with gold wings. He wasn't supposed to but they were there. This caused a lot of other angels to avoid him, thinking he was a demon in disguise. Angels also had abilities that they learned over the course of a couple hundred years or so. Alfred didn't take that long. He actually figured them all out very quickly and then picked up some new abilities as well, such as warning his Godchild of danger. Alfred would like to think that's the big one people started hating him for. Alfred understood why they didn't like him doing that. It wasn't fair to the other angels at all. They couldn't warn the people they loved that Ivan was coming so why should Alfred be able to warn Ivan about impending doom? It wasn't fair ...yet Alfred would do it again and again. Why? Because Ivan needed to live long enough to pray for forgiveness! He needed to be saved!
Ivan stood sighing and picked up his jacket. "Let's get this over with." he mumbled and Alfred couldn't agree more with him.
"Ugh," the blond angel mumbled. "Amen to that. Alright Ivan." he said and jumped on his back. "Take me to church!"
I will leave this here and see how it does. The next chapter will be longer if I get good feedback and people want me to continue. If I do continue I will add a lot more to this chapter first. I miss rusame so I just wrote down an idea. I hope you enjoyed it so far.
