SuperNatural Paradox

Volume 1 Chapter 1: Vampires are my Soul Dream

"Blood red; skin pale; moonlight draw me in. Quench my thirst upon coursing veins; allow my body to feel no pain…"I stare intensely at the moon as I repeat myself ten times. No other noises are heard from the field that I'm standing in other than the branches of the trees, which are surrounding the field, swaying back and forth as the wind tries desperately to pull them along. Not even the noise of crickets can be heard. The moon above me is as big and bright as it could possibly be.

"There," I mumble while not taking my eyes off the moon. "Let's hope that it'll work. All I have to do now is wait one entire week." As I leave the plain empty field to get back to my house, the only thoughts I have are my hopes that my wish will finally be fulfilled.

I hear a crackle from one of the bushes. A feeling that someone is watching me sweeps over my feet. I choose to ignore it as a wild animal.

One week passes since casting the spell. I'm sitting quietly in my seat during class with my head rested against my hand as the teacher writes a math problem on the chalkboard. My mind is overflowed with thoughts, thoughts about the spell that I had casted.

"Now," Mrs. Tohsaka whips around with the chalk tightly gripped in her hand. "Can anyone answer this question?" she asks as she scans the room for raising hands. No one moves a muscle. She scans the room again to make sure she doesn't miss anyone before saying anything more. "No one wants to answer this question?" Her voice sounds scratchy as she spoke. Kids in the room look at each other like she is the craziest person that they have ever met. "If no one answers this question," her voice straightens back out. "Then I'll just have to call on someone." She scans the room again for someone to call upon.

Because my mind overflows with thoughts about the spell, I shun out every word that I hear from her without even realizing it. Anger fills me. The very thought that the spell had no effect on me pisses me off. It was supposed to have turned me into a vampire. It was a waste of time just like all the other spells I have tried casting in the last few years.

"Sheen, Sheen." Mrs. Tohsaka calls out my name, but I hardly notice it. All eyes in the class gaze at me as I sit here thinking. "Sheen!" She yells this time. My eyes snap out of their daze and looks up at the teacher. A rush of embarrassment engulfs me when noticing that every eye in the class is looking straight at me. "How about you? Will you answer this question?"

"Me?" My body starts to tense up as I get nervous. I try desperately not to show how scared I am for being called on when I haven't paid any attention to what we are doing. "Well…" I look at the board, confused at the problem. The equation is something that is completely knew to me. I look down at my notes and see that I haven't written anything. "Uh…" I quickly think up an idea of what to say. "You need to-" I get interrupted by the school bell. "Thank goodness." I sigh in relief. Every muscle in my body relaxes after tensing up. I am saved by the bell.

"We'll continue this tomorrow." Mrs. Tohsaka picks up her bags and races out the door before any of us gets a chance to stand. Everyone stands, seeming not to care anymore for how fast she left since she does it every day. I've always wondered why she's in a hurry to leave.

Before I get the chance to stand up I see the girl of my dreams, Sophia Katatsuin, walk past me. Her hair flows in the pattern of the ocean waves as she walks past me and towards Koto Tashina's desk. He doesn't move from his seat as he continues the book that he's been reading through all class like he does any other day.

I barely know Sophia, but I have had a crush on her for a few years now. She has a lot of siblings in her family, too many for me to count. She's the second oldest. Her brother, Toshio, is the oldest of the bunch and has taken care of everyone since their parents had passed away two years ago. I know him very well and he always asks me to ask Sophia out on a date, but I never get the courage to do it.

By now almost all the kids have left the room. My eyes follow Sophia, watching her every move, hoping that she doesn't stop by Koto. Her eyes roll to his book as she slowly starts to pass him.

"Koto, what are you um… Reading?" She stops walking just before she reaches the end of the desk. "You've been reading that um… book for a while now." Steam builds up inside me as I begin to rage to myself. She does the very thing that I wish she wouldn't do.

I've hated Koto for as long as I can remember. We always seem to get into fights, but most importantly he always seems to be able to humiliate me at the end of every argument. It's because of him that I've built a lot of lack of confidence to talk to Sophia. I don't understand how she can find him a bit interesting.

Koto, not taking his eyes off the book, lifts up one hand and pushes his slipping glasses further up his nose with his finger so that it wouldn't fall. "I'm just reading about the indescribable mysteries and secrets that this world has to offer." He closes his book and sits it down gently. He looks up at her with an expressionless face and says, "The world is a mysterious place. There has been a lot of unexplained phenomenon in this world as we know it."

"Wow. That um… sounds like a very interesting um… book. Does it have anything to do with your um… future occupation?" She says while trying to sound excited.

The thought of Sophia and Koto talking to each other makes me feel deeply disgusted. I hate Koto one-hundred percent. Koto happens to be the smartest kid in our class while Sophia is the most beautiful girl in the school. I'm not the only one that thinks she is; I've heard a lot of other guys talk about her and try to ask her out, but luckily for me she rejects them all.

"It most certainly does." Koto, with his expressionless face, pushes his glasses up again with the tip of his finger to keep them from sliding off. Everything about him pisses me off. His glasses annoy me the most. He pushes them up all the time. I wish he would buy new glasses that'll actually fit instead of having them slide down every time he moves. "My dream," he continues, "Is to become the greatest scientist in the world who will unlock all the secrets that it has to offer."

"Oh my," Sophia giggles a bit at the unexpected reply. "It um… sounds like you're going to um… do great things one day!"

"Hmph!" I snarl before the two had time to say anything more. Before I knew it I interrupt their conversation by saying, "I doubt that there's any secrets left that you will be able to discover in this world."

Koto, with his expressionless face, pushes up his glasses and looks directly at me. Sophia swirls around the desk and looks at me in the eyes, like I said something that I shouldn't have. My body begins to tense up at the thought that Sophia will be hearing me and Koto argue. I didn't mean what I said, but the thought of the two talking caused me to say something that I knew was wrong. I do in fact believe that there's more to the world than what we see in our everyday lives.

"I don't blame you for thinking like that." Koto breaks the small silence that had formed after I've spoken up. His glasses begin sliding down again and I watch as he pushes them up once more. "People who are as smart as an ape, such as you, can't think past the numerous possibilities that this world can hold." Frustration and anger start to mix up inside me. How dare he call me an ape? I want to go over and punch him, but every bone in my body keeps me from moving an inch.

Koto stands up, picks up the book he's been reading as well as his bags and walks over to me. He stops in front of my desk, not giving me a glance. He looks off towards the door as he speaks to me. "There are still many things left in this world that I will discover, such as time traveling, teleporting, undiscovered animals; new ones are being found all the time, especially within the ocean. That reminds me, I'm going to need to figure out a way to build a submarine that can take you to the depths of the ocean that's capable of penetrating that dark gloomy water that lurks down there."

"You're um… really planning to do all that?" Sophia interrupts him before he had a chance to say more. Sophia walks over to us and stands next to Koto. Her presence in front of me causes me to blush a little, but then I glance back at Koto and it immediately fades away as anger takes over.

"Of course I am." He pushes his glasses up and turns to me. He bends over my desk and looks me in the eyes with his expressionless face. "I suppose, I could use you as a genie pig…" he pauses for a second like he's thinking things through. "Oh never mind." He pushes his glasses up and straightens his back, back out. "You wouldn't even be good at that. I would have better luck using an actual genie pig." He then turns and exits the classroom.

Sophia looks at me like she feels sorry, and then follows Koto out the door. The two leave me all alone in the classroom, feeling angry.

"Stupid Koto! Stupid Koto! STUPID KOTO!" I rage and stomp my feet down the sidewalk as I head to my house. "He made me look like an idiot in front of Sophia, and I made myself look like an idiot for saying something like that!" I stop to take a deep breath. I look up at the sky like I'm waiting for something to fall down. "Oh well." I look forward and continue my walk. "Someday, I'm going to become a vampire. I shouldn't be worried about Sophia since it'll be impossible for the two of us to be together when that happens." The thoughts that I had before Mrs. Tohsaka interrupted me came flooding back. "THAT STUPID SPELL!" My hands fly to my hair and pull it without me even realizing it. "Why didn't it work? Every spell that I have ever tried ended in failure." I stop at the front of my house. "I guess I'll have to search even harder to find a more powerful spell."

I spend the rest of the evening browsing through the internet to find a new spell, but I come across none that I haven't seen or tried before. I start to feel irritated that I'm unable to find anything new. I search through at least twenty pages before one catches my eye. "Summon a Vampire to Your Home?" I mumble. A sudden burst of excitement builds up inside me. "That's it!" I jump up and turn to the printer. "If a spell won't turn me," I slide the paper into the machine. "Then an actual vampire can." I sit back down and print a copy of the page, grabbing the new spell after it comes out.

I glance over the spell to see the ingredients that I need. When finished, I turn around in my chair and turn on the TV with the remote. I continuously flip through the channels until the news lady catches my attention by saying, "We have been having strange deaths lately in town." The word strange keeps me from flipping the channel any further. This is the first time that I have heard that we've been having strange deaths in town.

"The doctors and the police seem to all be puzzled by these bizarre deaths. We have here a dead body on the street that has been found that looks as if he were eaten alive by a wild animal." The camera gets a quick glance of the dead body before one of the police officers forces them to back off. The man's organs look as if they were all eaten. Only the bone remains of his right arm. His neck has a large bite mark, leading to a conclusion that he suffocated before he was eaten.

The police push a crowd of people back from the scene. Whatever did this wasn't human. A doctor walks by the camera lady as she says, "There have also been cases where people have died within four days after looking pale and drowsy. Doctor Ross," she turns to him. "Would you care to say a few words about this?"

Doctor Ross grabs the Mic. and says, "There isn't much for any of you to worry about in this matter. It only seems that there is a strange flu spreading around town, very slowly at random. That's it." He hands her back the Mic. and walks off.

"That's it?" The camera lady turns and asks him. "You're telling the viewers that it's nothing to worry about after some of the victims have already died from it?"

Doctor Ross stops and turns to look at her. He walks back up to the Mic. so that everyone can hear him clearly. "It's true that a few people have died with all the same symptoms, but it's too early to jump to conclusions. The causes of their deaths are completely unknown and as far as we can tell it's all irrelevant to them having the flu. None of you need to worry about it since it seems like the victims are all random, but I would suggest if anyone you see looks drowsy and pale, please bring them into the hospital so that we can take a look on them."

Doctor Ross leaves and walks his way to the half-eaten body lying on the ground. The camera lady looks back at the camera with a puzzled look on her face. She waits a few minutes to come up with something to say on the spot as she glances around.

"We will keep you all up to date on any of the strange deaths in this town as soon as we can get to them. I'm your broadcaster: Lisa Goodman." The news turns to commercial and I turn off the TV.

"Geez, talk about a cruel world out there." I mumble to myself as I drop to my bed and curl up inside the blankets. "A man eaten alive by some kind of beast and a disease that spreads to random people and kills them in a few days; I bet Koto won't be able to figure anything out about this disease." I chuckle as I turn flat on my back and gaze up at the ceiling. "If he tried," I yawn. "He probably would catch it and fall victim to it." My eye lids close shut as I fall into deep slumber with only the thoughts of the spell for tomorrow night.

I'm as quiet as a mouse as I sit in my desk the following day. I glance over the spell over and over, studying the supplies and the chant in order to cast it properly tonight. It looks simple as can be; the only problem is finding the right colored candles, two black ones.

Koto catches my attention as he walks by. "Hey Koto!" I say on impulse. A huge grin tries to take over my face, but I try my best to hold it back to keep Koto from making a remark about it. I can't help but think this is my chance to show him up. He stops and pushes up his glasses without looking back at me. Am I not good enough for him to look at me anymore? "Have you seen the news lately?"

"Is that all you wanted to ask?" He turns to me as he grunts. That expressionless face he always gives pisses me off again. "Everyone already knows by now of the dead body that was eaten alive and that the flu is spreading around town at random. It's no mystery. Is there a reason that you're wasting my time with such a retarded question?"

I can feel another heated adrenaline build up inside me. "Retarded?!" I yell without even realizing. I can feel a sudden uneasiness in the room as some of the students go quiet and their eyes roll towards me. "I haven't even got to the point yet." I say quieter.

"Then what is it that you want?" He pushes his glasses up with his annoying expressionless face.

"If you're going to solve mysteries in this world…!" I stand up from my seat and point directly at him without caring that the other students are staring. "Then I dare you to figure out the strange disease that everyone is talking about that randomly appeared sometime last week!" I suddenly feel a slight chill in the air from the realization that everyone is staring at the two of us, including Sophia who is sitting quietly in her desk.

"Is that all?" he turns his back to me and pushes up his glasses. "You're such an idiot. It's nothing out of the ordinary. It's just an ordinary flu spreading around, that's all. Why would I waste my time on such nonsense like that?"

"You call it ordinary when a few people have died from it already?"

"No, people can die from the flu if untreated. They just happened to be the poor victims of it. I'm only interested in mysteries that people are incapable of solving. Why does it matter to you anyways?" He turns back around and leans over my desk to look me in the eyes with his most annoying expressionless face. My face turns red as I start to feel self-conscious. "Are you interested in becoming my guinea pig after all?" Beating eyes roll around the room from the other students, waiting to see how this argument is going to turn out.

"Of course not!" I quickly say. "I don't know what makes you think I would ever be interested in working with the likes of you? I would rather die." I start to chuckle a bit to help myself cool down. I take in a deep breath and let it all out. Everyone in the class wonders why I was chuckling. Koto stares at me with his expressionless face, waiting for me to say more. "I figured you would give me a response similar to this. If you can't figure out a simple matter like this, then you're going to be incapable of solving the real difficult mysteries. I think you're afraid that you can't figure out the cause of death other than a simple flu. I don't think the flu will cause someone to go pale and sleepy unless they were throwing up, but I heard no such symptom of puking your guts out."

"Thinking of such trivial nonsenses like that is very childish." He turns around and pushes up his glasses, trying his best to hold in the small amount of anger building up inside. "It would just be a waste of time for me to go running around playing doctor when we have real ones working on it in this town already."

"I agree." A small smirk takes control of my face. I sit down and take in and out another deep breath. "It would be a waste of your time since you would be incapable of finding a cure. Aren't diseases some of those greatest mysteries that you would want to discover, Mister Scientist?"

"What was that?" He whips around and grabs me by the collar. He looks me straight into the eyes, the first sign of emotion I have seen in him in a long time. He strains his other arm from lifting into the air to keep it from hitting me. I can tell that I have finally hit a soft spot. The other kids in the room look as though they're all waiting for a fight to break out in the class.

"With that attitude of yours, your dream will only stay a dream and never become reality. If you're going to solve mysteries then you'll need to accept every challenge that comes your way no matter what it is."

Koto lets go of my collar and stands back and pushes up his glasses. He turns around again and says, "I don't need to prove anything to someone like you." He tightens his fists as he walks away. "Only an idiot would believe that there really is a disease in this town. If that were the case then we all would have caught it by now. If you can prove to me that there's more to this, then I will accept the challenge." He sits down quietly into his desk, pulls out a book and starts reading. It must be the same book as yesterday.

I can't let him get to me, Koto thinks to himself. I can't let an idiot like him get the better of me. It was completely unlike me to grab him by the collar. He takes several glances over at me as he tries reading his book. Why am I so frustrated about it?

Everyone in the room goes back to their business like nothing ever happened. Sophia must really hate me right about now for the way I act, but I can't let that get to me. I can't help it when I don't like the guy.

"Attention students!" Mrs. Tohsaka enters the room with an overwhelming smile. It did seem odd that she came in late today to class. "I have an important announcement to make. We have a new transfer student and I would like all of you to treat her well." Everyone looks at each other curiously. "It should make it easier on us to get to know her since it's still the beginning of the school year." She's right. Its fall 2014 and we just started school August 21. Today is September 2. "You can come in now." She looks towards the door as a girl enters the room.

The atmosphere completely changes as she comes walking in. "Glad to meet everyone." she giggles. Something about her is very strange to me, but I can't figure out why. Maybe it's the fact that her hair is grayish-white, or her skin is as pale as snow. But all these features heighten her looks to make her look even prettier than Sophia. An odd looking crescent moon necklace sways from her neck as she walks.

"I'm Surina Abigata and I hope I can make a really good friend in here." she giggles. Her eyes roll towards me for a split second. A sudden jolt of fear comes rushing through. "I'm currently seventeen years old. My favorite number is six and my favorite color is red for a particular reason." She licks her chops as she scans the room, slightly creeping out everyone.

"That's nice to know." Mrs. Tohsaka interrupts with the kindest voice she can give. "We only wanted to hear your name, Surina. That's all."

"Oh, is that all?" she chuckles and looks right at me. Why is she looking at me, is all that I can think of. Sweat rushes down my face. I try wiping it off, but more keeps coming. I've never been so nervous like this before in my life. I feel speechless at the gaze of her eyes.

"You may have a seat next to…" Mrs. Tohsaka looks around the room for an empty desk. "Uh…?" she notices Surina walking towards the empty desk in front of me.

"I think I'll take this one."

"That's fine. No one is currently sitting there in front of Sheen anyways."

So, his name is Sheen? Surina thinks as she walks to the empty desk, not moving her eyes from me.

"Thanks Mrs. Tohsaka." She says as she sits in her seat. She turns her head to me and says, "It looks like we'll be sitting by each other for now on. I hope the two of us can become good friends." She looks back at the teacher as she starts our history class.

"Now," Mrs. Tohsaka begins. "I want everyone to open up to page twenty-three."

Something about this new transfer student throws me off. She gives me the chills just by looking at her. Even though she's turned around in her seat, it almost feels as if she's still watching my every move.

I stare at the back of Surina's head for most of the class. She glances back at me for a few seconds. I roll my eyes away from her to keep her from noticing that I'm watching her. She smiles and looks back at the teacher.

Throughout the whole day, in every one of my classes, Surina ended up sitting by me. She doesn't say a word, only a few glances back here and there. I can't help find myself thinking that it's no coincidence that she's following me. Why did she come here to Cherry Grove High School when there are a lot better high schools in other cities?

On my way home, I still can't shake off the feeling that she's following me. I look around and see no one there. The urge to run home grows stronger and stronger, but I keep my cool until I've reached my home.

"Mom!" I yell as soon as I enter through the door. I walk to the kitchen drawers and start looking through them for some black candles. "Where are the black candles!?"

"They should be in the closet!" I hear her respond back. I groan at the thought of searching through the closet. I race over to it and open it up and find it loaded with boxes.

"Great." I grumble. "Searching through all of these boxes is going to take all night." I pull out the first box and start looking through it. I find only Easter decorations in it, and Christmas in the next.

I spend hours searching through the boxes until one box remains. The living room is stacked high with all the boxes that I had gone through. I pick up the remaining box, which was relatively smaller than all the rest, and give it a quick shake. I can hear a rattle inside despite how light the box feels.

"Please be candles." I mumble as I open it. I get excited when seeing four candles in there after looking for them for hours. Then I notice that there are no black candles, only two red and two white ones. As a result, a feeling of depression whips over my body. I close the box in frustration and start putting away all the rest of the boxes into the closet. When finished, I sit against the closet door with the box of candles on my lap.

I feel hopeless now since I can't find the necessary candles to cast the spell. If I knew it was going to end up like this I would have gone to the store in the first place, but even if I did, I wouldn't have any money to buy them. I can't give up on my spell now. I bite my lip in frustration. I can feel a small amount of blood squeeze through the skin.

"Why do you look so bummed, Sheen?" My father asks as he enters the room.

"Nothing that important." I lie to him. "I was just looking for some black candles, but we have none." Feeling hopeless, I stand up and begin walking out of the room with the box tucked under my arm.

"Do you need them right now?" I stop and look back at him. I see him pulling out his wallet. "If you need black candles for a school project then I will be willing to help pay for some." He pulls out six dollars and hands them out.

"You mean it?" A smile washes over my face as I grab the money from him. "Thanks dad. You're a life saver."

"I'm not sure about that, but you better hurry. It's starting to get awfully late, and your mother doesn't like it when you're away from the house at night."

"It is!?" I look at the clock and see that it's almost eight. The stores that are closest to my house will be closing in an hour. I panic and race out of the house. I grab my bike and ride off as fast as possible, afraid of getting there too late. I hope I don't get there too late. A sudden feeling that someone is watching me washes over me again, but because my impatience is getting the better of me I ignore the feeling in order to get the candles as fast as possible.

"Oh thank goodness," I pull my bike into the bike rack. "They're still open. Now, I need to hurry before the store closes."

I walk fast down the aisles in search of black candles. The search would be faster if they had boards hanging up telling what section has what. I guess this is what I get for going to Dollar Tree. "Finally." I mumble excitedly after seeing the candle section. "Now where are the black candles?" I glance around. I pick three up after spotting them. "Three is all I need. The spell better work after all the trouble that it's put me through just to get the supplies."

I race over to the cashier to hand them to him without giving him a glance. "Oh, hey Sheen." I hear him say. I look up and see that it's Toshio Katatsuin, Sophia's older brother. "How have things been going?" He scans the three candles.

"I've been doing fine, I guess."

"That will be $6.75." Six seventy-five? I only brought six dollars. What am I supposed to do now? This spell is becoming more of a pain than the other ones that I have ever done. "Is there something wrong?" he notices the frustration in my eyes.

"I, um…" I glance around; trying to come up with a solution, but nothing comes to mind. The only possible thing I can do is tell him. "I don't have enough on me. I only got six dollars."

"Is that all?" he starts laughing. His unexpected laughter causes my face to turn red. I feel embarrassed. I wish I can understand what's so funny to him. "You made it look like something really tragic happened there." He says when done laughing. "Don't worry about it. It's on me. I'll pay the seventy-five cents in return for something."

"And what is that?" I ask curiously.

"You have to ask Sophia out on a date one of these days." My face blushes bright red. I try getting myself to say no, but I couldn't mumble a word. "I think the two of you are perfect for one another. You need to talk to her more often." I eyes drop heavily to the ground at the thought of talking to her. I can never get the chance because Koto is always there. "What? Do you not like her?"

"What?" I look back at him and stutter, "Of course I do. That's not it."

"Then what seems to be the problem?"

I hesitate before saying a word. I feel uncertain of what to say. I'm too afraid to get attached to someone who I know I'll never end up with. "I do like her, but I don't think she likes me. She doesn't really seem to realize I exist in the classroom."

"Nonsense, of course she knows you exist. She mentions you all the time, as well as Koto." I feel angry when he mentions his name. I can feel my whole body releasing steam and about to catch on fire. "Uh, what seems to be the problem?" He takes notice.

"It's that stupid Koto that you mentioned. It's because of him that I can't get close to her. He keeps insulting me all the time in front of the whole class, lowering my self-esteem. I feel Sophia doesn't like me because of it. I feel that way because she laughs when he does it."

"I see." He escorts me outside and gazes up at the sky. "You know, my family has been through a lot in the last two years." My nerves settle down when hearing him say that. I know that their parents died two years ago, but I don't know what happened. No one in their family ever talks about it, not even Toshio. It comes to me as a shock to even hear him mention it. "The one who has been suffering the most out of all of us is Sophia. She may hide it from the general public, but she's always depressed. One of the symptoms you may notice from it is the constant use of the word um in her sentences. There's a reason why I think you would be perfect for my sister." He turns to me and says, "I think you're the one who'll make her snap out of her depression one of these days."

"How do you know that I can do something like that?"

He smiles and looks back up at the stars. "It always makes me happy to see her smile and laugh. It always happens when she's talking about you and Koto. That's why I personally think that you're a perfect match for her. She needs someone by her side that can continue to make her smile."

"I see." I'm at a loss of words. I never would have thought to hear something like this from him. To think that I'm capable of making her smile without any intention at all is inspiring. "What about Koto? I think he's the one that's making her laugh, not me."

"I wouldn't say that. He may be insulting you, but you're the one that reacts to them in a different way than what others would. Even though half the time you get excited and angry, she still finds a small amount of humor in it. I enjoy having you around too, and I think you'll make a great brother in our family." He chuckles.

A sudden feeling of uneasiness causes me to say, "I got to go now." I walk away without taking a glance back.

"I'll see you soon, then."

I really like Toshio; I don't know what to say to him. Mix feelings build up inside. I don't know if I should feel inspired to ask Sophia out, or feel depressed because I know once I become a vampire we will never be able to be together. Knowing that I make her laugh even though I never intended to do so makes me feel a bit good inside.

"I'm sure one of these days he'll come around." Toshio mumbles as he watches me walk off into the pitch black darkness. He looks down at his watch and sees that it's closing time. "I guess I better lock up and head home, otherwise Sophia is going to get worried about me."

As he locks the store door, he hears some bushes move around. "Hello?" He glances around. "Is someone there?" He walks away thinking that it was only the wind or some kind of animal, not knowing that someone is watching him from afar.

Late that night, I walk into the field that I go to cast my spells. The field that is usually filled with flowers is nothing but a barren wasteland with only grass and trees surrounding it on all sides. There's a particular reason I go here. This field is where it all started for me in wanting to become a vampire. The memories come flooding back to me every time I return here. I hold onto my necklace as I walk towards the center of the field.

I pull out three black candles and a red string from my bag. I use the red string to create a circle in the grass. I pull out three candle holders and place the candles in them, and then I sat them at the edge of the circle to form a triangle. I sit down in the middle with my legs crossed. I pull out the spell to look over it few times to help memorize it as much as possible to keep me from messing up. I look at my watch and see that it's almost midnight. I light the candles with a match and begin to chant.

"Living in the shadows with everlasting thirst…" I chant. I can hear a giggling noise come from the far off trees. I ignore it; thinking it as people walking around on the streets. "Devouring your victims to the curse of darkness…" I continue even though the giggling sounds as if it's getting closer.

"What are you doing, Mister?" I hear someone say. I stop chanting and immediately stand up.

"Whose there?" My body trembles at the thought that it could be a vampire, but there's no way. I haven't finished casting the spell. I glance around, trying to see if I can find anyone standing in the shadows. "You know, it's not nice sneaking up on people." I take a gulp before asking, "Are you a vampire?"

"A vampire?" a girl's voice giggles. Out from the shadow of the trees I see a little girl walk towards me. I can hear her voice loud and clear even though she's still a good distance away from me. She's not yelling or screaming at me, it's like her voice carries through the air. "What makes you think I'm a vampire, Mister?" she continues to giggle. She walks steadily closer to me. I watch as she walks into the light. She looks to be ten years old. Her skin is paler than Surina's and hair is as black as can be. Her eyes are a dark red, almost glowing. When I try looking into them I can feel myself getting scared. Even though I can still see her clearly, I continue to study her until she walks up to me. As of right now, she gives me no reason to think that she's not a vampire.

"You're not a vampire, are you?" I stutter. I feel a big gust of wind blow across the field, blowing out all three candles in the same time. The girl starts out giggling, and then bursts out laughing. "What's so funny?" I feel humiliated by my previous question.

"You're funny, Mister." She calms down. "Is it because of my eyes and skin? I'm sorry to say but I'm albino. I was born this way. The only thing that I happened to be blessed with is my hair. I made a habit to come out here during the night since I feel uncomfortable walking outside during the day. In fact," her voice deepens. "I don't think I've been outside during the day for years." She takes notice to the paper that I hold. "Does that mean you were trying to summon a vampire, Mister?" Her voice softens back up. She takes a step forward and grabs ahold of the paper in my hand before I had time to react. The fact that I can't get over her looks causes me to not notice that she took it right away.

"I'm right, Mister." she giggles. The giggling starts to creep me out and annoy me in the same time. "You're really funny, Mister. This is why you thought I was a vampire. You're trying to summon one to you, aren't you, Mister?" I want to say something, but I can't get over the way her eyes look. She looks sweet and innocent, but the vibe I'm getting from her feels like she can kill someone in a heartbeat.

"What?" I snap into realization to what's going on. I grab the paper from her hand and shove it into my back pack. "It's none of your business." I start grabbing all my supplies and shove them back into my back pack. I hang it over my shoulder and start walking away,

"O-o-o-oh," she whines. "Are you leaving already, Mister?" she follows me closely behind. "We were just starting to get to know each other." I feel as if this has already happened to me before.

"Why are you following me?" My heart starts racing. Something is wrong with her and every bone in my body is telling me to get away from her fast. "You can't follow me home."

"You know, you can't summon vampires with a spell, Mister." I stop. My teeth start to grind back and forth. My fists tighten. The last thing I wanted to hear from a stranger or anyone else in that matter is that it's impossible. "You can't summon anything with a spell." She repeats herself. "Well…"

"What would you know!?" I whip around to her. She can sense the anger build up inside me. "You're just a little girl! You wouldn't know anything!"

"Just a little girl?" her voice deepens into a serious voice. Shivers crawl down my spine as I look into her eyes. All anger that I felt vanished without a trace, only fear came rushing back. This girl couldn't possibly be normal. "I would be careful what you say, Mister. This world and the people that are in it are more dangerous than what they appear. If I were you, Mister, I would be careful when walking around alone this late at night. I've seen things you wouldn't have imagined in the dark." She turns around and walks away. The only thing I can do is to stare. "I would also stop trying to cast spells, Mister. Spells aren't good for anything other than to summon demons, nothing more." The word sinks deep into my soul. Demons are something that I don't ever want to mess with. She stops and turns to me to say, "I hope we meet again soon." she giggles in her normal sounding voice. "Just so that you know, my name is Midna." She turns back around and disappears into the shadows of the trees as I continue to hear her giggle. Soon all traces of her are gone, not a noise is left in the empty field.

"That girl has some serious giggling issues." I mumble after my daze wears off. "I'd hate to meet the family she belongs to. They're probably even worse than her. Midna? What a weird name. I don't think I ever heard anyone named that before. Never mind about that. She ruined my mood to cast spells after mentioning the word demon." I look up at the moon for one last time before heading home. "I wonder; will I ever become a vampire?" I hold tightly onto my necklace that lies hidden beneath my shirt.
