Uneven Odds

"Percy, it's over! We're going to die!"
"Calm down, Annabeth," Percy says with a laugh, taking her hand and his and he twirls her around for good measure. He takes hold of her waist and pulls her towards his chest, "Everything's going to be fine!"
Tears start streaking down her face and she shakes her head, "No it's not! Olympus doesn't exist anymore! All-"
"Hey, you know that's not true…" he whispers and smiles, "Everyone knows Olympus always moves-"
"Don't lie to me!" she shouts against his chest, pounding her firsts against his ribs in anger.
"I'm not lying, I promise," he lies. But, he still keeps the smile on his face and the calm serene sway to his steps as he starts them on a waltz, "I promise, okay?"
She seems to calm down and takes a few breaths, feeling all the energy starting to drain out of her. If there's one thing she's sure about it's that Percy wouldn't lie to her. Right?
"Oh yeah, my mom asked me to pick up some muffin mix when we head back," he says conversationally, lightly humming to himself the only song he knows Annabeth loves, "Don't let me forget."
"O-okay?" she says, starting to wonder if she hadn't actually been overreacting. After all, if the worlds' ending, Percy won't be talking about muffin mixes, right?
"I love you," he says and gives her a warm hug, still leading them through a waltz all the while. Side to side swaying that seems to overshadow the awful fight that they'd just lost. A rhythmic rocking that seems to slowly melt away all of the problems of the world.
"I love you too," she says, burying her face in his chest, loving the feeling of his heartbeat and the soft vibrations of his humming. It was grounding to her and she felt all her anxiety slowly give way to Percy's calm words.
He pulls his arms around her a little tighter and quickly snaps his head down to hers when she finally looks up, finally taking notice of the orange glow behind him. She pulls on his jacket to see, but he quickly smiles, spins them around a few times before he's now facing the burst of light instead of her. He clears his throat to draw her attention to him, "H-hey, Annabeth?"
"Yeah?" she answers, too lost in the moment to care.
"Close your eyes for me, please?" he says, leaning down a bit with a smirk.
"What are you doing?"
"Just, t-trust me," he says, his voice faltering slightly as he draws her a little bit closer.
The orange glow seems to become even brighter and Percy pulls his jackets around her more, engulfing her in his warmth. He made sure she wouldn't see what's coming their way and what was about to take their lives. So, instead of running away, he slowly ran his fingers through her hair, knowing that this was the last time.
"Close them," he coaxes her and winks, "No peeking, Mrs. Jackson…"
"Mrs. Jackson?" she repeats teasingly, causing him to smile. She grins and bites her lip.
Finally, Annabeth closes her eyes and she can feel his breath on her lips. She smiles when he finally presses his lips against hers. She feels his smile. His tears… and then nothing at all.
