Red. The colour that has become a motif in the Earthbender's life. A companion fic to "A Flash of Blue Light". Once again dedicated to FlutFlutFlyer because without his nagging, this crappy fic wouldn't be a reality.

Red.

A dark maroon with a metallic glimmer, accompanied by the piercing smell of copper .

The colour he saw pooling around his feet every time he fell asleep alone, and his dreams turned to terror. When he was once again the little boy standing petrified, shrieking in the alley way as his parents blood pooled around him, and his brother shook over their fallen bodies.

Red.

The true colour of fire and flame. Heat, passion, and anger.

What he saw whenever Mako stepped closer to Korra. Whenever they brushed past another, their expressions painting a better picture than words ever could. Whenever the two shared a glance, red dancing across their cheeks as the red flames clouded his vision and engulfed his heart. Red. Pumping through his veins, pounding in his ears, seeping from his palms as he clenches his fists and his nails dig in further and further.

Red.

The hue of destruction.

Hot coals flickering amongst ash. Amongst the rubble of the arena where he and his brother had finally found solace. Red, strewn across the crumbled remains of the life he had before Korra, before the terror of the streets, and before the complete emptiness that came along with destruction.

Red.

A soft, but yet somehow still vibrant shade.

The colour that surrounds his brother. Radiates off of him. The colour of safety. Warmth. Security. Love. The colour that has kept him safe for countless years.

Red.

Light. Rebirth. Acceptance.

Korra is and has always been Mako's, as much as the colour is and will always be his.
