"Okay, Alvin. What is it that you so desperately needed to see me about?" Brittany frowned, standing in the doorway to Alvin's bedroom.

"Hi, Britt. I know your busy, but I wanted to talk to you." The eldest chipmunk's voice was quiet and raspy, in stark contrast to his usual loud and obnoxious behavior.

Damn, the Chipette thought, Alvin sounds like hell! He looks like it, too. Hair's uncombed…shirt unironed…no hair gel! He must be dying.

"What do you want to talk about?"

"Us."

Brittany moaned.

"Come on, we've talked about 'us'. There is no 'us!' You couldn't be faithful to me."

"Britt, listen to me! Just for a few minutes." Alvin pleaded in a loud whisper.

Brittany rolled her eyes.

"Whatever," she said as she walked into the room.

Despite her seemingly flippant attitude, she was concerned about Alvin-he hadn't lifted his head for the entire conversation.

"Could you at least look at me?"

Alvin reluctantly complied.

"You've been crying!" Brittany gasped.

"Yeah. I didn't want you to see."

Brittany's heart twinged with compassion; it had been years since she had seen Alvin cry. She walked over to his bed and sat down next to him.

"What's wrong?" she asked, placing her hand on her friend's shoulder; then, realizing she had let down her guard, she quickly withdrew it.

Alvin drew a shaky breath-Brittany's proximity made the memories of the time they were together cut even more deeply.

"I know I've hurt you, Brittany-I cheated on you, teased you. I'm really sorry. I know my apology probably doesn't mean much, but I truly am sorry."

Brittany bowed her head.

"It's okay, Alvin. I've gotten over it. That's not the only reason you called me over, though, right? I mean, you must know I've forgiven you; I'm talking to you again, aren't I?"

"Yeah…there is something else."

Alvin became silent.

"Well?" Brittany said after several seconds.

"Okay…this is gonna be really hard for me to say…" the eldest chipmunk inhaled deeply, then continued. "I've spent years going from girl to girl, and for a while it was fun. Now I see I've just been fooling myself.

All this time, I've been trying to fill a hole in my heart…only one person fits in that hole."

A tear began to form in Brittany's eye.

"Me?" she asked softly.

Alvin nodded.

"All the other girls were just distractions. Maybe this doesn't make sense, but…I was afraid to admit how much I cared for you…thinking about how much I loved you hurt…I'm not sure why. You're so beautiful…even looking at you hurts-it's like looking at the sun."

"Oh, Alvin!" Brittany grasped Alvin's s hand, tears streaming down her face. "I didn't know you felt this way!"

Alvin looked into Brittany's beautiful blue eyes.

"Britt…I want you back. I…I want you to show me what love is."
