Chapter 1

Chance Meeting

A puff of air spiralled up into the freezing night air. There were no other sounds besides the quiet breathing of a person. The silence of the night felt like a giant presence pressing down on you.

It's the calm before the storm Kagome thought to herself. She scoffed an almost half laugh. More like the eye of the storm, considering the heavy amount of snow that blew in just minutes before.

Kagome glanced down at herself, relieved that the only injuries she sustained when the first gust of wind and snow came is some small cuts on her palms from when she fell. Cutting strips of material from her thick jacket, she wrapped them around her hands to stop the bleeding and to protect them from the cold.

Adjusting her pack on her back Kagome thought back to just hours before, when the priestess of the village she was passing through warned her about the unpredictable weather around these mountains. The villagers said it's a demonic presence atop the mountain that affects the surrounding area, and warns away travellers from crossing through the path that leads over the mountain.

Kagome's eyes easily saw the path leading further up the mountain, despite how dark it was. She shifted her sight to her right and looked down the drop off a few feet away. Looking to her left, a shear rock wall met her eyes.

Expanding her senses to determine her next course of action, Kagome felt out the mountain with her miko senses. It's not a demonic presence I feel up top, but it pulses when I brush it with my senses Kagome realized.

The high whistling sound of the wind started up again, and Kagome figured it would only be another minute or two before the storm starts up again.

I need to find shelter before then, Kagome thought. I've gotten better at my survival skills, being on my own the last two months. But an untrained human miko being out in blizzard and surviving is very unlikely.

Kagome started walking towards the rock wall she saw to her left. Stumbling and sliding over the snow covered rocks scattered about the base. She made it to the rock wall and felt her way along. Her hand slipped into a crack; as she felt around Kagome realized the space was big enough to barely fit her. At least no one else besides small animals and me can fit in.

Kagome smiled to herself at her lucky find and hoped it led to a space were she could have room to lie down. She didn't want to wait out the storm by standing between rocks; it could take all night for the storm to pass!

Kagome slid her foot in first, to get a good footing. Then felt around with her hands and eased inside the small opening. The space opened up a little and allowed her to turn and face a small area. Before her eyes could take in the entire area, Kagome felt the air current move very slightly, but before she had time to react a sharp blade was pressed to her neck.

Kagome looked and saw guarded red eyes staring intently at her, only inches away.
