Curiosity

Toby sat in the pie shop all alone. Mr. Todd and his mum had left to the market. Toby wasn't that use to being alone. And it wasn't that he was scared, it was just that without any work he was put to, he was bored. He had tried to go into the basement to snoop around, but the hinge holding it shut was much too heavy for him to lift. And eating pies didn't even entertain him long.

After a while of sitting, and swallowing his fear, Toby climbed the stairs up to Mr. Todd's Barber shop. He pushed on the door and it slowly creaked open, a bell above it dinging at the movement. He caught sight of the chair. His eyes glided over the torn wallpaper, the trunk, and his desk. He opened the trunk, only too find old red stained cloth. He didn't know what it was that stained the clothing, but it had an awful stench.

The chair was merely a chair, that interested him none. And that left the desk. There was very little on it. A small family portrait of an unfamiliar family. A mirror, a pen and some blank paper. And a small velvet box. He lifted it open, the hinges creaking much softer then the door. And in a neat row, he saw the shining silver blades.

Sometimes it scared him to sleep, knowing Mr. Todd was upstairs with these. To wake up finding his mum dead. Or not waking up at all. He let his hand glide over the blades, they felt cold at his touch. He took one out of it's special place, and clicked it open. Turning it in the light, and seeing how funny his face looked in it's reflection.

But his splendors soon ended as the door swiftly open, and Mr. Todd stood there with Mrs. Lovett. He quickly placed the blade back down, not even bothering to put it back in it's place, let alone fold it. Mr. Todd neared him, a look of disgust in his eyes, and Toby quickly rounded the chair to escape, clinging to Mrs. Lovett's raggedy dress behind her. " Come now Mr. Todd, leave the boy be. " She said in her usual soft tone.

" The boys snooping through my things and expect me to just let him get away with it! " He spat, the blade Toby had been fondling, now in hand. He neared them both, looking as if he were to lift his blade, but Mrs. Lovett placed a calm hand over his chest, which caused him to come to an immediate halt. " Now now Mr. Todd, calm your temper. " She said in her soothing tone. " Tis just a boy's curiosity, leave him be. " He stood there for a moment obviously in thought, before he let his armed hand relax.

she smiled at him. " There there love. " She said taking the blade from his hand, and neatly folding it, placing it back in it's case. " Go prepare the shop for openin Toby boy. " He sat there stupefied, before nodding his head, and quickly running down the steps.

Mrs. Lovetts, placed her hand on Mr. Todd's. " Thank you love. " She said. He gave her a stern look, and then turned his head, squeezing her arm in his, and then releasing it. Mrs. Lovett always found it sweet how shy Mr. Todd was, and he did care for them. She gave him another toothy smile and then left him in solitude. He shook his head. " Damned boy. " He said under his breathe.
