The wisps of my breath billow and evaporate in the chilly November evening. The sky is turning a light shade of pink as the sun starts to set behind the trees that lay on the far end the school's wide-open lawn. There's a slight breeze and cars are just beginning to clear out of the parking lot. I'm alone, waiting for mom.
Despite the almost tangible calm of the scene, I'm anything but.
Pacing back and forth across the school's wide front steps, I find myself muttering.
"Damn her, why the fuck does she screw with my head so much?"
At that moment, my phone decides to take a flying leap from my pocket. It clatters to the ground. I stare at it for a moment.
I snap.
After a sharp kick to the phone that sends it flying at the school's brick wall, I sit, clutching my head. I growl in frustration. Damn Tori. She would get back with Daniel. Granted, I wasn't really expecting otherwise, but watching them be all lovey again made me sick to my stomach.
The truth was, I just prefer her when she's single.
As terrible as that sounds, I know I mean every word.
The doors open behind me. I barely register that until I hear a giggle. "Jade!"
I turn, and there she stands.
Speak of the devil.
She strides towards me in that confident way she has. That's the trait she usually radiates. And I usually really admire it.
Not today. Today, it only eggs me on. She reaches me. "Hey," she says, smiling. I almost melt, like usual, when she hugs me.
Not today, I remind myself.
She tries to pull away, but I let out a low, possessive growl. I slide my fingers into her belt loops, pulling her by the hips back towards me.
"What are you..-" is all she can say before my lips cut her off. I put as much intensity as I have behind the kiss. One of my hands disentangles itself from her belt loop and moves to the small of her back. I use it to pull her closer.
Then I hear the car rolling up, the unmistakable sputter of the exhaust. Mom's here. Damn.
Reluctantly, I break away. I hug her once more, lift and shoulder my bookbag. I pick up my phone, which has miraculously survived the abuse I dealt it, and walk toward the car without looking back.
