The Mirror

She heard the glass shatter, saw it falling in slow motion. She felt her heart breaking and shattering along with it. The cracks that had been creeping through her heart had finally give way to the torrent of pain now pouring from her dark, amber eyes. She could hold it in no longer. Yes, Regina Mills was no longer in control of her heart, nor was she in control of her weakening body and soul.

She had been gazing in her hall way mirror, mere moments ago. Feeling things she never thought she would or could again. However, on this day Regina's body, heart, and soul had betrayed her mind…her resolve. She knew it now, felt it in her very bones. She was, indeed, in love with the woman that once brought her such torment. The blonde and green eyed wonder that Regina was so sure would be her down fall in one way, was in fact that in another.

As she stared into the mirror, into her own glistening, darkening eyes, into her soul, she could see her love for the sheriff…for Emma growing. This love that would destroy her, destroy everything she knew and believed in. And there it was in the back of her thoughts, that voice…her mother's voice, telling her she wasn't worthy of being loved. "No, Regina you cannot be loved, you cannot love." This voice that had been filling her soul with poison for as long as she could remember.

Seeing the tears in her own eyes, remembering all the things she had done. Feeling her rage and anger bubble and putrefy inside of her. She just new, absolutely new this voice was right, had always been right. But she felt that sting, that familiar sting and grip that Emma had on her heart now telling her differently. "No, t can't be, it mustn't be," she thought to herself.

She could not look upon herself any longer, she could not peer into the depths of her growing love for Emma…her growing weakness. "What would mother think of me now?" she thought to herself, cringing at the thought of her mother and of her current wretched appearance. Regina Mills slowly picked up a white, and of course apple scented, candle. Gritting her teeth and grimacing, at one last glance upon her wretchedness she hurled the candle into the mirror, shattering it, shattering herself.

She fell to the ground, her resolve was broken, ended by the echoing sound of shattering glass. She fell to the ground weeping beyond any consolation. Weeping for her broken heart, her broken soul. Her rage was replaced with only sobs and screams. Her heart only wept for her loss and for what she believed she could never find again. Deep down what she wanted to find, with all her heart, in Emma. But she could not, would not believe in it now. With tear stained eyes, Regina looked down at the shattered glass surrounding her, she slowly picked up a jagged shard…peering into it she saw her emptiness. She saw the emptiness, deepening in her dark eyes and she could bear it no longer.

With one swift motion, Regina sliced through the arm of her, now wrinkled, pearl white button up shirt. In that moment, just before the blood rushed from her arm, she felt weightless, floating outside of herself, the voice had ceased, and she felt her emptiness engulf her, reducing her to nothing. As the blood began to rush violently from her arm, she came back to reality, came back to herself. The pain surged up her arm, right into her heart, like a current of electricity. She felt more tears burning behind her eyes, as she sat there in the hall way, among the shattered glass, feeling more alone than ever before. Yes, Regina Mills was coming undone.
