A Glimmer of the Old You

Takes place during Metamorphosis.

I do not own Supernatural or its characters.

Lately it seemed Dean didn't know his brother at all, and truthfully it scared him. When Sam disagreed with Travis about just killing Jack instead of giving him a chance, Dean couldn't help but feel a little relieved and proud. It's because he saw a piece of the old Sam, the Sam he knew, and had known his whole life, the Sam who was moral, who asked questions first and shot later, and who was the hunter with a conscience. After all of this, after having seen what Sam had become; colder, harder, after finding out he had been using his abilities, he just didn't quite seem like his Sam anymore. He had changed and Dean found himself more afraid than ever before that Sam just might become what they both had feared, that he wouldn't be Sam anymore. But his reluctance to kill Jack Montgomery was somewhat reassuring, even if the real reason behind it was because he could relate to the guy, because Sam still held out hope that he could overcome the evil inside him, that there were shades of gray and righteousness. That was the humanity in Sam. That was the Sam Dean knew and was proud of, and even secretly wished he could have been more like at times.

A proud smile laid beneath Dean's hunter face, but inwardly faded as he thought of how he had contributed to hardening his baby brother with his own selfishness by leaving him in the wake of his deal - and he knew he had. His mind briefly traveled back to when Sam had told him that he would have to be more like him if he was going to survive on his own. That had hurt Dean. He never wanted Sam to be like him. It wasn't who he was, but now Sam could become something worse entirely. And Dean was terrified that he would lose his brother.
