She thinks she should hate him on principle, and she is uncomfortable with overly familiar strangers in general, so he should repulse her, really, except he is handsome and rather talented, and cheerful, and all this somehow softens the blow, and her regard. She finds him attractive, she realizes, and it's no surprise, even though Alamut is full of wizened priests and middle-aged women and small children and smelly soldiers. She knows she has always liked handsome men, but it has never mattered before now. Yet she should hate him on principle, and so in her mind she places him midway between hateful and attractive, at a point she labels "tolerable". She does not know what to make of this, and so wills herself not to make any harsher judgments of his character until she has time to soak in his utter tolerableness and discern a bit more.
