Lily looked into James' eyes lovingly. This was the man she had known and loved for… she forgot how many years.

'I really love you James…I always will…' she said, tears glistening in her eyes.

James looked at Lily sternly. 'Oh no, no you don't, not yet, Lils. Don't you dare…'

'But…he could come any time now….' A single tear sprung from her eye and ran down her cheek. It dropped off and hit the baby that Lily held protectively in her arms. She looked down at Harry. 'I love you Harry…'

James said nothing. As much as he hated to admit it, he knew that Voldemort would probably be there any second. He tried to look cheerful. James wiped the stained tear from Lily's cheek and tilted her head up to look at him. He stared into her eyes: a look of terror sparkled from her once lively eyes. She smiled wryly.

'Come on…we're not going to go down without a fight are we?' asked James

Lily shook her head. 'No, we'll give him everything we've got. Isn't that right, Harry?' She tickled her son who giggled adorably.

'A shame he never got to grow old and happy.'

'I'm not old, and I'm as happy as can be,' said James, giving Lily a quick kiss.

Lily laughed. 'You are old! Old fogey!' James got up and walked around, crouched down, pretending to be an old man. Harry laughed as well, and Lily made him copy James with her, playing around on the floor, like a normal family.

Suddenly they heard a boom. 'Oh my god…' whispered Lily, standing up properly and clutching Harry to her chest. 'He's here…'

James looked at Lily and held her. 'I love you Lily…Don't you ever forget that, ok?' Lily nodded and bit her lip, trying not to cry. James took Harry from her and hugged him hard. 'Goodbye, Harry. I love you,' he tickled him. 'I'm sure you would've made a great Quidditch player!' He smiled, then handed Harry back to Lily.

'I'm gonna go try and stop him for a bit. It'll give you and Harry a chance of survival. Good luck…' he started to run off when Lily shouted.

'JAMES! Don't go…I love you…'

'I have to go, Lily… for you and Harry,' he whispered coming back to her. '…I love you, I always will, ok?' he and Lily kissed one more time. They heard a loud crash and a high-pitched laugh, and James broke away. Even he had tears in his eyes, but all the same, he frowned determinedly and shouted loudly: 'Lily, take Harry and go! It's him! Go! Run! I'll hold him off…'

James ran off and Lily looked into Harry's eyes. 'I'm sorry Harry…but I'm afraid this is it. You know your father and I love you very much, don't you?' Harry burbled happily. Then Lily burst into tears. Now that James had gone, she couldn't hold it back any longer.

Harry saw his mother's sad face and started howling out tears. Lily looked at him through her tears. 'I'm sorry Harry. You don't understand this, do you?'

Lily heard a scream. 'James…' she whispered. She clutched Harry tightly and backed slowly into a corner, as a dark figure entered the room.

'Not Harry…' Lily whispered. Then her voice broke out into a scream. 'Not Harry, please not Harry!'

'Stand aside, you silly girl…stand aside now…' Voldemort said impatiently.

'Not Harry, please no, take me, kill me instead!'

Voldemort advanced menacingly towards the two clutched against the wall, as if it would suddenly brake off and they'd be free to run away to safety.

'Not Harry! Please…have mercy…have mercy…' Lily sobbed quietly. Then she stopped. She realised there was no point.

'Goodbye, Harry,' she whispered. 'Goodbye James…'
