A/N: I'm getting absolutely terrible with titles, I must apologize. But yeah, this was a small prompt given to me by a fellow writer through a reblog thing on Tumblr...
Distant Fear
The summer rain drummed on the window to Lucy Baker's flat; lightning flashing with the occasional strike being seen in the distance. The distant, roaring thunder was what managed to wake the young, detective constable from her light sleep, and she wish that it hadn't. Ever since she was a little girl it had always scared her because of how unpredictable it was.
She sat in bed wide awake and jumped every time her childish fear boomed in a chain outside like it was laughing at her. Lucy held in her little, scared squeals to not wake the sleeping inspector beside her, but knowing that he was there gave her some comfort.
She watched his steady breathing; sleep being the only time Lucy didn't see some form of sly smirk or frown grace Potty Prof's face, and for once he looked peaceful. His crimson hair was down for a change, and while Lucy would never say it to save her tongue, it was cute. But what was more interesting to her was that Alfendi's hair would still alternate between its crimson red and placid purple. It made her think that it determined who woke up in in the morning and she giggled at the thought.
Lucy's giggling was quickly cut off by a loud crack of thunder that was now right over head, and her squeal immediately woke Alfendi. "Lucy, are you alright?" He sat up and gently wrapped his arms around her to bring her into an embrace, but he couldn't help but laugh. "Is my detective constable afraid of a little thunder?"
"Potty Prof, it isn't-" Another round of thunder sounded off outside from the quick passing storm and Lucy's words fell to another squeal.
"You wouldn't dare flinch at the sound of a gunshot, but instead to be scared of something so childish, it's…" He paused, and Lucy pulled back from their held embrace and looked up into dark, amber eyes; she expected to get one of Potty Prof's usual rants.
"Its wot?"
"It's… cute." The word was forced out as he quickly let go of her, face a faint shade of pink; he started to get back under the bed covers. "Now go back to sleep!"
With a yawn, Lucy laid back down and positioned herself so that the tips of their noses were almost touching. "You're so timid, Prof!"
"I am not timid! Don't even think about comparing me to him either, or else I'll-"
Lucy gave him a quick kiss on the nose and that instantly stopped him. "I know you'll cut out my tongue… But can't ya jus' admit that ya can be nice?"
Instead of getting a response, Alfendi's hair dimmed to its lighter purple and Placid was left with no right to answer for his other side.
The final crack of thunder sounded off again in the distance, but Lucy no longer let out a sign of fear. "Lucy…"
"I'm alright, Prof." She turned over and laid on her other side, a smile on her face. "When I'm wit' ya there's nowt ta be afraid of."
There were no more words exchanged between the two and the light rain filled up the silence; a small smile placed on Alfendi's own face that remained until he finally drifted off to sleep.
