Bittersweet

By Yazminah Khan

Raven laid back as the doctor poured the cool gel over her abdominal area. She stared at the white ceiling. Her thoughts wandered to what lead her to this predicament. Her palms felt sweaty and her stomach felt queasy. She had not eaten anything all day but her stomach felt like it was going through hell. Just relax Rachel she told herself. "Well… there it is. Congratulations Miss Roth". Raven turned her head towards the monitor as the doctor smiled at her. She did not feel like smiling as she saw the little creature that was growing inside of her. Her worst fear just got confirmed. Her mind was going wild with thoughts. What was she going to do? How was she going to raise this child by herself? Was the baby going to look normal? What if her or she had powers? What if the baby looked exactly like its father? That last question got her. She felt lost. "Can you see what it is?" She asked. "It's a girl" he said.

The doctor handed her a piece of brown paper towel so she could wipe the cool goo from her pelvic area. "You have to tell him" said a voice in her mind. I don't have to tell that jerk a single thing . "You have to…he deserves to know" said Wisdom. "I don't have to tell anyone anything" She said a bit loudly. The doctor looked at her rather weird as he handed her a copy of the sonogram. He told her that she had to come again in a couple of weeks for another appointment. With that she made her way out of the doctor's office holding the pictures of her baby. Her daughter.
Raven walked around Greenwich Village lost in thoughts. One store caught her attention. Little Miss Sunshine, vintage children's boutique. She stared at the beautifully dressed child sized mannequins as she brought her hands to the small bump in her abdomen. "I guess I have to quit my job" she said, as she smiled just a little, her hands still rubbing her pregnant belly.
