1 The Alliance
(Based on Eugene Fields' "The Duel")
The "grim" black dog and the bottle brush cat
Side by side in the common room sat.
Natural born enemies, but (imagine that)
They joined forces to catch a rat!
Animangus (not that's a trick!)
Chose that Crookshanks as his sidekick.
Sirius wasn't a lunatic!
(I wasn't there; I'm not that quick—
I heard it from Nearly Headless Nick).
When Crookshanks spied Scabbers, he let out a growl.
A chase ensued—a cat on the prowl.
Under the Whomping Willow tree
That rat in a tunnel attempted to flee.
Out of Ron's pocket he tried to fly,
But Padfoot grabbed Ron and that is why
"Caught like a rat" Scabbers turned out to be.
(Now listen: I'm only letting you hear
What Dobby the house elf would volunteer).
When Padfoot transformed, he was Sirius Black.
Harry was stronger—knocked him flat on his back.
But Crookshanks sprang to protect Black's heart,
Jumped on his chest with a running start.
Then even though Harry had his chance for revenge,
He just coldn't do it—the thought made him cringe.
His want then flew airborne, way off the track.
(Don't think that I exaggerate.
Sir Cadigan saw it, so he relates).
Lupin and Sirius—All is explained.
But Scabbers (now Pettigrew) is to be blamed.
Lots of confusion—Snape comes too.
Lupin transforms. All is askew.
But the truth about this cat and mutt
Is friendship great; that's open and shut.
Pettigrew's gone. For shame, for shame!
(How do I know this? You may have guessed.
Heard it from Buckbeak! Now we'll give it a rest).
